Topic: Joshua Judges Ruth

Review of C. Pressler, Joshua, Judges, and Ruth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The latter is evident in her struggles with the violence and holy war ideology of Joshua and Judges.
Joshua is a near-perfect leader in the mold of Moses.
In the final chapters no judge, even a flawed one, is present to prevent the cultic disorders and violence of Micah and the Danites, the far deadlier rape of the Levite's wife and the resultant slaughter of fellow Israelites whether of Benjamin or Jabesh-gilead.

 Catholic Scripture Commentary
In the opening part of the book, at 1:5 God tells Joshua: "As I was with Moses, so will I be with you." The very last lines of Deuteronomy record that Moses laid his hands on Joshua and so Joshua was filled with the spirit of wisdom.
Really, the book of Joshua itself admits that not all the land was conquered - 13:1 says the Lord told Joshua that Joshua was by then very old, and much of the land still remained to be conquered.
So the 'Judges" were not in general judicial officers, they were mostly charismatic leaders that is, leaders with a special divine mission to do the work God intended.

It's hard to resist a song that begins, "I went to a funeral/Lord it made me happy." Though "Since the Last Time" – the centerpiece of Lyle Lovett's fourth, bleakest and most resonant album – may or may not represent the voice from inside the coffin, the song's skewed perspective is pure Lyle.
Joshua Judges Ruth (three consecutive Old Testament books) offers gospel songs for those incapable of making the leap of faith, cowboy ballads for urban neurotics and love songs for loners.
If Lovett is himself a misfit, he sings to the misfit that lives within every listener.

From the allusion to the work on the Pentateuch as lately finished, in the Preface to Joshua, which was published in 404, it is presumed that the date of the translation of the Pentateuch is 403.
The books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, were probably the last of the Vulgate translation; the Preface declares Jerome's intention of devoting himself henceforward to the Commentaries on the Prophets, a work which took up the remainder of his life.
Next in the series is Sophtim, that is the book of Judges; and in the same book they include Ruth, because the events narrated occurred in the days of the Judges.

The authors of this commentary take a canonical-historical approach to the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, three books that are diverse, yet share the common historical context of the tribal settlement of Canaan.
They examine Joshua, Judges, and Ruth as narratives with dynamic theological messages about the dynamic relationship between God’s people and the powerful God who gives land and provides deliverers for the people.
They offer many valuable insights into individual passages as well as the overall messages of these books.

That was a deep thought for such a stage of revelation, and it in part anticipates Christ’s tender words: ’He goeth before them, and the sheep follow Him, for they know His voice.’ They follow at His feet.
