JOSHUA RIFKIN - Scott Joplin: Piano Rags | Buy cheap Music with low price on CD
Joshua Rifkin has taken liberties with the music, and this is most evident in Weeping Willow (the last strain), The Entertainer (the second-to-last strain), Elite Syncopations, the Paragon Rag and the Magnetic Rag.
Rifkin's use of a proper instrument (a 9' concert grand piano) and his 99.9% attention to playing the pieces precisely as written, coupled with his virtuosity, make this the premier recording of Scott Joplin's masterpieces.
Rifkin does take some very minor liberties in a few of the pieces, but they are tasteful and do not detract from the pieces in question.

Just a short note to state my admiration for Joshua Rifkin, the consumate musician who is equally at home playing Scott Joplin on the piano or conducting J.S.Bach's Mass in B Minor.
Joshua Rifkin plays Joplin in a straightforward manner, the way it is written, with few embellishments (for the most part), and that's what I like.
Rifkin is an outstanding interpreter and performer of Joplin.

PlaybillArts: News: Lost Bach Cantata Recreated by Musicologist Joshua Rifkin
Rifkin, a conductor and composer, created instrumental parts for the cantata, which as it was found contains only soprano and alto parts, in German, for the seven-movement vocal work.
Rifkin said his first impulse was to leave the work be.
Among his many areas of significant scholarship, Rifkin is best known for his argument, first presented in the early 1980s, that Bach used only one singer per part, rather than a chorale.

Rifkin used a similar style of philological analysis to arrive at his argument that Bach typically used one singer per part.
Rifkin's 1982 recording of the B Minor Mass (Nonesuch 79036, 2 CDs) was the first to use the one-per-part approach he advocates.

It is not strong evidence for Rifkin, of course, nor does he claim it is. But he and others have shown that is is not strong evidence against him.
But according to Rifkin, there is no real evidence for the ripienists sharing the parts, either in documents or in the parts themselves.
Rifkin adds that a substantial number of parts show positive signs of having been intended for use by one singer only.

To some degree Rifkin's argument depends on the proposition, which not all other scholars have been disposed to accept, that two (or more) singers never shared the same partbook.
What we do know is that Bach, ideally, wanted a choir of at least twelve to draw upon for normal Thomaskirche duties, and that he probably didn't get that many; and it is more than likely that on some occasions at least he had to manage with a very small choir indeed.
His text in the "Quoniam" by the way is much modified: this is one of several movements in which Rifkin's research has evidently produced significant departures from the established text.

I've been recommending that disc for years and still use it as a reference for those two works--and as an example of how fine Rifkin's work can be.
However, I can't find anything much to like here--except for the orchestra, and for Rifkin's pacing, phrasing, and general feel for Bach's drama and tragedy that few conductors seem able to convey on recordings.

Mass in B minor BWV 232 - conducted by Joshua Rifkin
This version by Rifkin is, apparently, controversial because of his one voice per part interpretation.
I recently compared nine period instrument recordings of the Mass in B minor and Rifkin's was highly distinctive and throughly engrossing.
Rifkin deals extensively with issues relating to the work's history and genesis (including the issue of parody), the edition used, and of course OVPP; but although Rifkin devotes much space to the latter issue, he does not allow it to occupy the spotlight.
