The actress Josie Lawrence first made waves in comedy circles as a pioneering member of a constantly changing group of players who appeared in a twice-weekly residency at the Comedy Store in London.
The show raised her profile considerably and audiences, pigeon-holing her as a comedian, were surprised when she turned up in a number of straight acting roles soon afterwards - many being unaware of her background in this sphere.
The success of French and Saunders, and Victoria Wood, had done much to erode the traditional TV bias against women and comedy, so it was no surprise when Lawrence was given her own series, Josie.
