"Josie and the Pussycats", in this time period where pop music rules the charts, may not have been as bad of an idea as it sounded like it was going to be.
SOUND: "Josie and the Pussycats" is presented in both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio, but the movie itself is rather lacking in sound use overall and neither format provides a really engaging surround-sound experience.
Final Thoughts: "Josie and the Pussycats" could maybe have been a sharp, funny film in the hands of different filmmakers and it's unfortunate that Elfont and Kaplan haven't seemed to build upon their previous effort.

Josie and the Pussycats is the story of three girls who play in a local rock band who haven’t quite made the big time yet.
Josie and the Pussycats isn‘t a particular good film but I don‘t think it deserves the harsh rap it got from critics during it‘s theatrical release either.
Josie and the Pussycats is based on an Archie Comic book series of the same name and being such there are a few characters who are in the movie just because they were in the comic.

Josie and the Pussycats soon discover a sinister plan by Fiona and Wyatt, which threatens the world, but more importantly, may tear apart the band.
The film is presented in an anamorphic widescreen and has been letterboxed at 1.85:1.
I don’t know if this was their intention, but I came away from this commentary with the impression that "Josie and the Pussycats" was a low-budget film, where nothing was properly planned, and the producer wound up directing half of the movie.

I understand I may be somewhat out of the demographic for this film, but if it wasn't made for me – someone who actually saw and loved the original cartoon – it's attempt at satire is surely going to be lost on those still affected by Brittny and her teenage counterparts.
The film begins with the juxtaposition of Josie and the Pussycats local Riverdale gig where no one shows up and the arrival of boy band of the moment Du Jour as they kick off their concert tour in Riverdale.
Josie tries to inject reason into the proceedings, but the chance to be rock stars is just too exciting to turn down.

In 1970, Hanna-Barbera did an animated version for CBS that tweaked the concept a little — Josie and her friends formed a rock'n'roll band and went on tour, having adventures and solving mysteries wherever they stopped.
Josie & the Pussycats in Outer Space was basically the same show, but with a slight change of venue.
They were being adapted into a live-action feature film with Rachel Leigh Cook in the title role (it was released April 11, 2001, and subsequently forgotten), and the 80-year-old cartoonist demanded his financial due as Josie's creator.

Josie and the Pussycats was about as good as it could have been.
Josie and the Pussycats was at its best as a very funny satire of how disposable the current era of bubble gum teen pop culture is. The movie lost steam whenever the hackneyed moralizing that one has to believe in one's self and "we all just want to belong" was in the forefront.

It's difficult to consider Josie and the Pussycats a true remake because the characters are of such insignificant origin that you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who is substantially aware of it.
Josie and the Pussycats is still a fun movie -- probably more fun than you think it is -- given all of the weighty, unwieldy themes that Kaplan and Elfont have set out to incorporate into their film.
This may be why their last film to attempt to subvert teenage culture, the 1998 romantic comedy Can't Hardly Wait, was more successful -- because it focused on a smaller, more primal ritual of teenage living, the last hurrah of senior year of high school.

What Josie doesn't realise is her music has been laced with subliminal messages in a secret government plot to control teen trends.
Anyone who has watched ten minutes of MTV will appreciate the movie's satirical barbs, and the risible Du Jour (deftly played by "Buffy" 's Seth Green and Breckin Meyer, among others) is a brilliant parody that will have the Backstreet Boys consulting their lawyers.
"Josie and the Pussycats" is released in UK cinemas on Friday 24th August 2001.

Josie comes off as a wide - eyed innocent who seems incapable of recognizing that sometimes things are just too easy (oh, she notices, but then she ignores it).
Posey is part of the satire as she shows up in a film that makes fun of every reason why she tends to stick to Indy films.
"Josie and the Pussycats" might not be as great as we all thought, but it sure isn't as bad as a lot of critics think, either.

This time, the victim is "Josie and the Pussycats", whose characters began life in the pages of the "Archie" comic book before being given their own short-lived animated TV show three decades ago (it lasted only 16 episodes).
Magoo prevents Josie and the Pussycats from claiming the dubious title of worst cartoon TV-to-live-action film translation of all time (and there are plenty of competitors, with more - such as Scooby Doo - to come).
Josie and the Pussycats reminded me strongly of Spice World, but without the British accents and all the cameos to hold one's flagging interest (Alan Cumming has the dubious distinction of appearing in both pictures).

Since a dumb original increases the chance of a feature-film fiasco, the odds were firmly against Josie and the Pussycats, a live-action updating of the goofy, giggly, and just plain stupid '70s animated TV series.
As in the 'toon, Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook), Val (Rosario Dawson), and Melody (Tara Reid) are best friends and band-mates who foil criminal shenanigans while racing around Scooby-Doo-style to their own jangly tunes.
When Josie discovers the evil afoot ("I'm a trend pimp!"), she vows to unshackle kids everywhere from Fiona's musical mind-control, and it is this consumer-critiquing angle that is Josie's most consistent source of laughter.

Josie is obviously in love with local hunk Alan M. (Gabriel Mann), and he's in love with her, but neither can bring themselves to confess their feelings.
This is especially true when juxtaposed with the mediocre relationship material, where the Pussycats try to maintain their friendships amid the onslaught of publicity and popularity, and where Josie and Alan M. try to tell each other how they really feel.
It almost seems like they started with a sharp and clever script satirizing conformity and consumption, and then a talentless hack was hired to clumsily shove in a bunch of stale, by-the-numbers exchanges in a misguided attempt to humanize the characters.

On the whole, however, "Josie" is a cute, melodic adventure that should appeal to any of us who ever wanted to be "On the cover of the Rolling Stone".

Granted, 'N Sync's unintended self-parody was pretty amusing, but "Josie and the Pussycats" takes the joke and turns it into a flashy, over-the-top joyride.
The plot of "Josie and the Pussycats" is hardly original just a couple of months ago there was an almost identical "Simpsons" episode (featuring guest voices by 'N Sync, natch).
Luckily, there's plenty of good stuff in "Josie and the Pussycats." It takes a lot of work to be funnier than pseudo-soulful remakes of bad '80s songs, but this movie actually pulls it off at least until the Backstreet Boys do an album of Lionel Richie covers.

The Pussycats of now are a garage band with a fun line in grungy agit-pop, stuck playing gigs to those who couldn’t care less at the Riverdale Pin Palace.
Josie and the Pussycats is one heck of a workout for any system, and the 5.1 mix on this disc (sorry, there's no 3DX Surround Sound as featured in the film) manages to do it the justice it deserves.
The soundtrack consists mainly of songs by Josie and the Pussycats, all in a catchy girlie pop/rock sort of Veruca Salt meets No Doubt meets Elastica via The Go-Gos' kind of style, which in actuality were performed by a bunch of session musos.
