By additional revision, 39 plants- described and reported by Pancic as new taxa- were either assigned lower systematic rank or retained that assigned by Pancic at the level of subspecies, variety and forms.
It should be noted that 55 species of vascular plants, described by Pancic as new to the Balkan Peninsula, have retained the same taxonomical rank and may be considered as the most significant Pancic’s botanical discovery.
This Nomenclator of Pancic’s taxa, is based on taxonomical and systematic works of Diklic and Mayer (Mayer and Diklic 1967; Diklic 1996, 1998).

A large number of taxa new to science, ranked as species, subspecies, varieties and forms, has been named after Pancic, which is a special honour and recognition for one botanist.
Most of these taxa are described on the basis of Pancic’s material, which he had sent to his friends and colleagues in European botanical centers.
It should be noted that Josif Pancic belongs to the group of rare, to put it freely, most significant world botanists whose botanical achievements are perpetuated in the name of one plant genus.

It cost Pancic many efforts to proove by facts, that he was right.
At the time when Pancic lived and worked classification and taxonomy of plants were not on today's level of knowledge.
To every taxonomy educated botanist is clear that the author of spruce species is Pancic, who knew to see the complex of charasteristics and to estimate to what extent this species was different feom related species, and Purkyne just did nomenclature revision.

It is interesting to note that in former Yugoslavia all the six republics and two Serbian autonomous provinces had their own national Academies, except Croatia, where the term `Yugoslav' was traditionally kept.
Let us mention that the first president of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, founded in 1887, was a Croat - Josip Pancic (1814-1888, a botanist, born in the Croatian town of Bribir).
We cannot avoid the names of three Czech professors - Karel Zachradnik (1848-1922, mathematics), Gustav Janecek (1848-1929, chemistry) and Vinko Dvorzak (1848-1922, physics) who were invited to initiate the educational and scientific work.
