Josip Broz Tito was born in Kumrovec, Croatia, a part of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy at the time, in an area called Zagorje.
In the autumn of 1913, Broz was conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian Army; in May 1914, he won a silver medal at an army fencing competition in Budapest.

Between 1905 and 1907 Josip was forced to work with his uncle in Slovenia due to the financial hardships of his large family as he was the seventh child of fifteen, thus putting off his education and apprenticeship until 1907.
