Josip Juraj Strossmayer (also ''Joseph Georg Strossmayer''; February 4, 1815 – May 8, 1905) was a notable bishop, benefactor and a politician from Croatia.
Strossmayer was instrumental in the founding of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1867, as well as the re-establishment of the University of Zagreb in 1874.
Strossmayer continued to use the money obtained from his diocese to fund the building of schools, galleries and churches, notably the ornamental cathedral in Đakovo whose building he oversaw between 1866 and 1882, and which he dedicated to the ''glory of God, unity of the churches, concord and love of his people''.

Strossmayer withdrew from political life in 1888, in consequence of a rebuke administered to him by the emperor for his public expression of sympathy with Russia and his consistent hostility to Hungary.

However, Strossmayer’s letter revealed that the real objectives of the Catholic Church were directed towards a speedy conversion of the Orthodox majority of the population into Catholicism.
In reality, Strossmayer advanced the introduction of liturgy in the Old Slavonic language since he believed that the liturgy celebrated in Latin presented difficulties for the South Slavs and therefore presented a barrier to conversion of the Orthodox population to Roman Catholicism.

The University in modern sense, including science and engineering, was founded in Zagreb in 1874, thanks to the efforts of the great Croatian Maecenas bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer (born in Osijek, 1815-1905).
J.J. Strossmayer became internationally known for his speech against the dogma of papal infallibility at the Vatican synod held in 1869-70.
It is interesting to note that in former Yugoslavia all the six republics and two Serbian autonomous provinces had their own national Academies, except Croatia, where the term `Yugoslav' was traditionally kept.
