NORPAST – Open meeting April 2000
By using the same approach as described for Hardangerjøkulen including the independent summer temperature record based on chironomids from Finse, the general pattern of Holocene winter-precipitation variations in the Jostedalsbreen region is similar to that quantified for Hardangerjøkulen.
Periods of low winter precipitation during the Holocene at Hardangerjøkulen and in the Jostedalsbreen region correlate with periods of enhanced ice-rafting in the North Atlantic.
The Holocene winter precipitation curves for Hardangerjøkulen and Jostedalsbreen may therefore reflect periods during the Holocene with prevailing mild and wet winter conditions (positive NAO index) and periods with prevailing cold and dry winters (negative NAO index), and thus large-scale Holocene variability in the atmospheric circulation over NW Europe.

Nordfjord and the Jostedalsbreen glacier, Norway. Travel guide & tourist information by Hostelbookers.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
High up in the mountains, dominating the whole of the inner Nordfjord region, lurks the Jostedalsbreen glacier, a five-hundred-square-kilometre ice plateau that creaks, grumbles and moans out towards the Sognefjord and the Jotunheim mountains.
The glacier stretches northeast in a lumpy mass between Hwy 5 and Hwy 15, its myriad arms – or "nodules" – nudging down into the nearby valleys, the clay particles of its meltwater giving the local rivers and lakes their distinctive light-green colouring.
Since then, roads have been driven deep into the glacier's flanks, the comings (but mostly goings) of the ice have been closely monitored and there has been a proliferation of officially licensed guided glacier walks (breturar) on its various arms.
