Social psychology had the potential to be interdisciplinary, but few departments that promoted this path have survived (Michigan's Institute for Social Research is one of the few).
Lewin's legacy in social psychology is most profound by virtue of the students he trained (during his group dynamics work at MIT in the 40s).
The theory dominated social psychology from the 50s to the 70s and led directly into the first wave of cognitive social psychology (self-perception theory, attribution theory---which was again heavily influenced by Heider).

Floyd H. Allport: The Present Status of Social Psychology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The social order is not to be regarded as a substitution for original nature, imposed by "society" upon the individual, but as a modification of original nature produced by contacts with certain, other persons and with culture objects in the individual's immediate environment.
In this latter field, especially, the psychology of the culture pattern and social institutions, the present writer feels that there is the possibility of a valuable contribution from the student of human behavior.
Social scientists who have developed such systems should be quid: to recognize their limitations; for in the actual data of science only the most elementary systematization is at present possible.

 Rumor and Gossip Research
Social psychologists Nicholas DiFonzo, at Rochester Institute of Technology, and Prashant Bordia, at the University of Queensland in Australia, have collaborated in another significant program of research on rumor and rumor control (and are putting the finishing touches on a book to be published by the APA).
Their work has largely focused on the sensemaking aspect of rumors at the individual level, exemplified by a series of studies exploring how rumors are embedded with stable cause attributions that affect perceptions and predictions in systematic ways (DiFonzo and Bordia, 1997, 2002).
Disintermediating, that is, increasing the density of social connections around gatekeepers, is expected to decrease negative effects of gossiping and to assist in improving norm coherence.

Classics in the History of Psychology -- Bandura, Ross, & Ross (1961)
Therefore, in order to increase the precision of treatment comparisons, subjects in the experimental and control groups were matched individually on the basis of ratings of their aggressive behavior in social interactions in the nursery school.
Indeed, social imitation may hasten or short-cut the acquisition of new behaviors without the necessity of reinforcing successive approximations as suggested by Skinner (1953).
While these experiments have been widely accepted as demonstrations of learning by means of imitation, in fact, they simply involve a special case of discrimination learning in which the behavior of others serves as discriminative stimuli for responses that are already part of the subject's repertoire.

Seventy-one male students in the introductory psychology course at Stanford University were used in the experiment.
During the first week of the course, when the requirement of serving in experiments was announced and explained to the students, the instructor also told them about a study that psychology department was conducting.
He explained that, since they were required to serve in experiments, the department was conducting a study to evaluate these experiments in order to be able to improve them in the future.
