The Journal of Mundane Behaviour is a scholarly sociology journal devoted to everyday behaviour and experiences.
He'll also settle for the "ordinary," the "habitual," and the "quotidian" -- anything, he says, that "apparently has no significance beyond itself." His premise, naturally, is that the opposite is true: that the overlooked trivia of, say, everyday conversation, workplace behavior, or family life can illuminate how power and conformity shape social relationships.
These unnoticed, unmarked aspects of our lives are often the most political and yet depoliticized, and it is one of the goals of this journal to expose these processes.

Mind Hacks: Everyday insanity: Psychosis and the mundane
Occasionally however, the mundane and the psychotic collide, producing uncanny and jarring contrasts that highlight the unreality of everyday life.
In psychosis, the mundane exists in a state of duality where it is no longer wholly banal or conspicuous and yet maintains the qualities of each.
Here, the appearance of the mundane in the world of psychosis causes a paradox in the rational world, making it a little more ambiguous and difficult to understand; while the mundane leaks into psychosis, psychosis is leaking back into the world of the mundane.

The journal was inspired by an article by Wayne Brekhus of the University of Missouri, published in 1998 in the journal Sociological Theory.
Even more mundane than shaving is riding the elevator- the focus of Terry Caesar's article "In and Out of Elevators in Japan." Apparently, whereas in Japan there is a fairly rigid code of public behavior, that code relaxes inside elevators, where an "improvisational, private character of personal interaction" is possible.
The challenge of the Journal of Mundane Behavior is to find something interesting and relevant in the day-to-day routine of ordinary life, something that lifts it above the mundane.

Humbul full record view for -- Journal of mundane behavior
The Journal of Mundane Behavior is dedicated to the sociological discussion of what appears to be everyday and ordinary in culture.
The journal contends that the unnoticed and ordinary interactions and events of everyday life and culture make up the basic fabric of existence: the ordinary, then, passes without notice yet is fundamental to society.
Articles in the Journal of Mundane Behavior range from the politics of changes in common social habits, such as table manners, to more complex considerations of major cultural 'fads' - such as the boom self-diagnoses of illness amongst Americans.

When I first read the journal’s description, I wondered whether there was not an unintended parochialism about its characterization—e.g., mentioning that a good subject of study would be the behavior of people in cars.
But equally, in the journal’s programmatic statement, there is a contrast between great historical issues—marked as ‘important’—and mundane issues.

Terrorist alerts ‘mundane’ for URI professor
Mandel helped found the Journal for Mundane Behavior, a two-year-old on-line journal (www.mundanebehavior.org) that ferrets out insights into what it is to be human by examining and commenting on common experiences that we generally ignore.
As the name implies, the journal is not only a peer-review academic publication, it was created to appeal also to the non-academic crowd.
Although past issues have spotlighted bull sessions, the hidden meanings behind facial hair, and wall calendars, a piece on atrocities and the everyday was authored by Mandel, the guest editor of the Journal’s commemorative issue of the terror attacks of September 11.

It sees what the rest of us overlook because that stuff is so, well, mundane (my dictionary defines 'mundane' as being ordinary or common).
For example, I just read an article in the Journal about beards and shaving, one that interests me because I've had a beard for almost as long as I've been able to shave.
One of the great difficulties with the mundane, of course, is that it's harder to see and to grasp.

Schaffer, 30, who established the Journal of Mundane Behavior two years ago, recently took a job in the appropriate setting of Millersville, a small college town in Lancaster County.
That was an epiphany for Schaffer, who confesses, "I was a nerd for a long, long time." He got permission from Brekhus to use the title and soon launched a journal with a colleague at California State University, Fullerton.
But Mahaffy, who thinks sociology is overly intrigued by the exceptional and the marginal, doesn't think it will be hard to keep the Journal of Mundane Behavior on course.

 JMB 2.2: Birth, Sitting There
Some might attribute this sitting behavior to the fact that the students were squeezed into narrow rows with their desks bolted to floor making it very difficult to stand, but I tend to think that it reflects a more general trend in education.
Sitting seems to be an activity that is so common and so mundane that it is easily taken for granted and overlooked (literally and figuratively, so to speak), and the only time it seems to rise into the consciousness of students and faculty is when there is no place to sit.
In the case of “he/she is not sitting there,” the added significance is that it emphasizes behavior in which the group, an implicit “we,” was not participating.
