Bookreporter.com - JOURNALISTIC FRAUD by Bob Kohn
What JOURNALISTIC FRAUD is, however, is a thorough, point-by-point analysis of the journalistic mechanisms by which the so-called, self-styled "Newspaper of Record" (a term that, incidentally, is a marketing ploy, nothing more) permits its editorial viewpoint to distort its news coverage.
The journalistic well is poisoned at the source and trucked all over the country.
He sets forth in JOURNALISTIC FRAUD a scenario whereby the Times could regain its respectability and once again become the newspaper that was respected for its objectivity, as opposed to being fit for fodder for late night television monologues.

In the broad legal sense a fraud is any crime or civil wrong for gain that utilises some deception practiced on the victim as its principal method.
In criminal law, fraud is the crime or offense of deliberately deceiving another in order to damage them — usually, to obtain property or services from him or her unjustly.
In the criminal law of common law jurisdictions it may be called "theft by deception," "larceny by trick," "larceny by fraud and deception" or something similar.

While most of the journalists, like many Americans, describe themselves as "moderate," a far higher number are "liberal" than in the general population.
Journalists and actors do it all the time - mostly because their real names are boring or difficult to say.

Journalistic Fraud: How The New York Times Distorts the News and Why It Can No Longer Be Trusted is a book by Bob Kohn with a thesis similar to that of Bernard Goldberg s Bias (book).
Journalistic Fraud claims to detail the precise way a unified liberal bias perpetuates the media, citing copious examples from the New York Times.
Goldberg claims, for example, that the Times omits the adjective liberal when describing liberal sources while still applying the adjective conservative when describing conservative sources as part of a hidden conspiracy to establish liberal views as mainstream.

Reuters, according to this theory, is taking advantage of the chaos of war, and the chaos of the international media coverage, to promulgate staged or contradictory news reports, knowing that their audience is distracted by an onslaught of too much information.
However, this theory is somewhat supported by the fact that Reuters had outsourced part of its captioning operations to Singapore and to Bangalore, India, where captions were written by "entry-level employees" who had little direct knowledge of the situation on the ground.

The New York Times has revealed a former reporter "committed frequent acts of journalistic fraud," including stealing material from other newspapers, inventing quotes and lying about his whereabouts, according to an investigation conducted by the paper.
Among the reported examples of fraud were stories in which Blair falsified visits to the home of former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch and a Navy hospital in Maryland where wounded Marines were patients.
The Times said Blair was aided in his deception by using laptops and cell phones--which prevented editors from knowing where he was--and his access to databases of news articles and photographs, from which he took details of places he had never been.

In "Journalistic Fraud," Kohn shows dramatically that the Jayson Blair scandal wasn't the first journalistic fraud perpetrated by the Times, but rather the culmination of years of often subtle, insidious distortion of reality for political purposes.
Kohn shows how the original founding vision of the Times was hijacked by those with a political agenda who used the prestigious paper to spread a dangerous form of propaganda.

Jayson Blair is a liar, a cheat, an impostor, fraud, con man, and thief.
The most astonishing thing about the story is not that Blair turned out to be a con man and plagiarist, that happens occasionally, even in the best of journalistic institutions, but the denial of the reality of this man’s sociopathy as demonstrated by the chronicity of his errant behavior.

The revelations of "frequent acts of journalistic fraud"—upon the discovery in May 2003 that a Times staff reporter, Jayson Blair, engaged in fabrications and plagiarism that may have polluted hundreds of the paper's news articles—brought to light what may be the underlying cause of the journalistic fraud addressed in the following pages.
The four-page, 14,420-word article was billed as an accounting of the dozens of known journalistic deceptions perpetrated by 27-year-old Times reporter Jayson Blair, who had worked for the paper for nearly four years.
Sneaking editorial opinions onto the front page by identifying them as "news analysis" is, to be sure, one way to couch editorial opinion as straight news, but the deception on which this book zeros in—one far more pervasive and pernicious than the antics of Jayson Blair—is the direct manipulation of the "straight" news story.
