"Journey Into Amazing Caves" is a terrific example of the IMAX's format's ability to educate and entertain, which is not suprising, given the director.

There’s something inherently wrong about a documentary about caves that includes aerial photography -- but this new IMAX feature, Journey into Amazing Caves, manages to work in some of those trademark “swooping over the river canyon” shots that no IMAX feature seems to be complete without.
The feature follows two young women, micro-biologist Dr. Hazel Barton and the professional spelunker (“caver”) Nancy Aulenbach as they journey to isolated locations and tortuous environments in their quest to discover new caves and the cherished extremeophiles.
Their journey takes them to a mountainside cave in Arizona, an ice cavern in Greenland, and two underwater caves in the Yucatan.

This large format IMAX short portrays a couple of real life adventurers, cavers who travel around the world exploring virgin caves looking for "extremophiles," bacteria that thrive in extreme conditions of heat and cold, or in environments that would poison, starve, or suffocate more typical bacteria.
The cave diving sequences are the best of a good bunch in this film, combining the pure thrill of exploring the unknown with a constant feel of palm-sweating danger.
If Journey into Fantastic Caves delved into other aspects of extremophile research (namely the origins of life on Earth, and the possibilities of life on other planets) the opening might have made some kind of sense, but the film curiously ignores these subjects.
