Paghat's Garden: Sempervivum tectorum, pale green
And that whole while they had very much the look of Jovibarbas, so I never doubted they were what they were labeled as being, until they bloomed two years later & had the rose-pink flowers of Sempervivum tectorum, as shown in a June portrait below.
Jovibarba & Sempervivum are so similar in appearance, & each has such variation even within a single species of each genus, that it is understandable that even a specialty nursery might become confused.
Jovibarba has a greater tendency toward the pale green coloration, while Semps more often have at least reddish hues.

 SEMPERVIVOPHILIA : Fungal diseases
This fungus infects Sempervivum sensu stricto as well as Jovibarba (Sempervivum subgenus Jovibarba) and the observable signs of this infection are the same.
The case is actually very frequent in fungal plant pathology, that a precise race of a parasite apparently with multiple hosts corresponds to each host.
These various races can be differentiated only experimentally by their specificity to a given host (this specificity corresponds, in fact, to some subtle adaptive nuances in the enzymatic equipment of the parasite).

 Jovibarba species
There are five species of Jovibarba although some botanists feel that some of these should be considered as subspecies rather than species.
The genus was previously included in the genus Sempervivum as a subgenus or section and the segregation of Jovibarba as a separate genus is still controversial.
Under garden conditions each of the other Jovibarba species have been crossed with J.

 The Sempervivum Page
Sempervivums are related to Jovibarba and Rosularia, choicer and less hardy genera often grown in a cold frame by alpine plant enthusiasts and distinguished from Sempervivum by their flowers.
All five species of Jovibarba have bell-shaped flowers, usually with six pale-yellow petals.
Sempervivums will usually survive outside in climates with cold, wet winters such as that of the United Kingdom, although some of the hairy Sempervivum cultivars, Jovibarba and Rosularia will appreciate shelter from the winter rain.
