In 1971, four of their tunes became singles, and all of them made the national Top 10: "Joy to the World," "Liar," "An Old Fashioned Love Song," and "Never Been to Spain." Cory recalled the biggest of that group, the best-selling single the band -- or ABC Records -- ever produced.

Known for a lighthearted style, Axton's stinging indictment of drug culture in Steppenwolf's 1967 song "The Pusher" and their 1971 single "Snow Blind Friend" were an anomaly in the drug-friendly youth environment of the time.
Axton also wrote songs for ex- Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, Elvis Presley, folk singer Joan Baez, late country star John Denver and singer Linda Ronstadt.

Amazon.com: My Griffin Is Gone: Music: Hoyt Axton
While Hoyt Axton may be best known to some for writing memorable music for others (Steppenwolf's 'The Pusher,' Three Dog Night's 'Joy To The World,' etc.), it's this obscure 1969 release that captures his brilliance (and occasional eccentricity) better than any of his other solo work.
Hoyt Axton the tunesmith was definitely in top form when he wrote the songs for this album.
I am a huge Axton fan but this music is so misguided, so drenched in simplistic hippie shtick complete with overblown symphonic orchestration that the laugh reaction stops early and irritability and stupefaction set in very quickly.

Axton made an agreement with Lake Shore Music to issue an album of his greatest hits in 1981, and Lake Shore didn't even bother to send him a copy of the album (I sent him a copy after an interview in 1983).

The larger than life image of the bear of a man that was Hoyt Axton filled many roles in life: artist, actor, athlete, philospher, but above all, storyteller and songwriter.
All of these and more are included in this long-overdue, 25-track, 78-minute anthology covering almost four full decades of recording, culled from his stays with 20th Century, Columbia, Jeremiah, Capitol, A&M, MCA etc. Truly the Very Best of Hoyt Axton.

 Three Dog Night
With the number one status of “Joy,” Hoyt became the second part of the trivia question, “Who were the only mother and son songwriters to have both written number one songs?” His mom, Mae Axton, wrote Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel,” which hit the top in April 1956, 15 years earlier almost to the day.
Three Dog Night’s opening act on some of their tours was 32-year-old Hoyt Axton.
Three Dog Night continued to blaze trails with Russ Ballard’s 1971 “Liar” (#7), “Just an Old Fashioned Love Song” (#4, 1971), “Never Been to Spain” (#5, 1971), and the Earl Robinson/David Arkin-penned “Black and White” (their third and last number one, 1972).

Harmony by Three Dog Night CD
One of fans' favorite Three Dog Night albums, HARMONY contains two of the group's biggest hits, "Never Been to Spain"--their second hit written by Hoyt Axton, after "Joy to the World"--and the gently swinging "Old-Fashioned Love Song." Unlike some Three Dog Night albums, however, HARMONY has album tracks that actually eclipse the hit singles.
"Harmony", Three Dog Night's sixth album was an excellent album and contained the hits "Never Been To Spain", "An Old Fashioned Love Song" and "Family Of Man".
Hard to believe that three decades have passed because this album has all of the qualities of a new release.
