The make-up on him made him believable as the noble Moor, considering that he was 56 years old at the time the film was made; as in his 1948 version of "Hamlet", it hid his age.
Maggie Smith (Desdemona), Derek Jacobi (who was introduced into acting by Sir Laurence Olivier himself and played the villainous Claudius in Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet" and the Chorus in Kenneth Branagh's "Henry V"; he plays Cassio in this one) and Joyce Redman (Emilia) share the screen with one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of all time.
I recommend this version after reading the play before seeing any other version; I've read that the 1952 version starring Orson Welles isn't very good.
