Unfortunately Joyce was as often as not rather hampered by the fact that she found it difficult to communicate with her daughter, and a leitmotif of the earlier seasons was her frustration that Buffy was constantly so secretive.
However, Buffy underestimated her mother: Joyce was much stronger than she imagined, as was illustrated by Joyce's behaviour during her illness in season five, and her reaction to the discovery that Dawn was not human, something she accepted far more calmly than might have been expected given the circumstances.
Joyce was a woman without enemies (with the possible exception of Principal Snyder), and there was barely a resident of Sunnydale who did not seek or receive solace from her at some point.

Slayage, Number 2: Bowers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The parenting by and of her mother Joyce and her Watcher Giles is a recurrent theme on the series, one which strongly suggests that the monsters Buffy and her cohorts slay are not limited to those that exist more comfortably beyond their immediate households but also threaten their safety within them.
Initially, Joyce is merely annoyed with Buffy’s doubts about Ted, and, early in the episode, recites what has obviously become a Summers’ household mantra: “It’s not exactly like men beat down the door” she begins, “when you’re a single parent,” Buffy says, completing her mother’s well-worn complaint.
Joyce parrots Ted’s version of the confrontation and finally defends Ted for “protecting” Buffy from embarrassment by declining to tell her friends that she had cheated.
