Joycean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A text is deemed Joycean when it is reminiscent of the writings of James Joyce, particularly Ulysses or Finnegans Wake.
The characteristics usually alluded to in employing this term are a vast range of style and technique (particularly symbolism and stream-of-consciousness), and an inclination towards somewhat sordid subject-matter.
More than anything, however, Joycean has come to denote a form of extreme verbal inventiveness which tends to push the English language towards, and in the case of Finnegans Wake beyond, the limits of readability.

 SRB Review 2(1)
It should be stated from the outset that nowhere does Weir state or imply that she considers her analysis to be reflective of what I have called a literary criticism approach to the study of mind.
But in probing the human mind so thoroughly through the Joycean system of writing, she has ipso facto provided us with a remarkable example of how literary criticism or semiotics can be used as powerful tools for doing what cognitive scientists attempt with human subjects or artificial intelligence programs.
What Weir shows in her penetrating analysis of-the Joycean system is that the concrete modes of thought and perception that shaped primitive mentation continue to reverberate in the corners of our mind.

 How to Read Joyce
One result is that reading Joyce can make a difference to all one's reading, enriching, complicating, and perhaps even undermining it (at least until it becomes possible to substitute a fuller sense of what reading is for the narrow one that often prevails in educational establishments).
The number of entrances to the Joycean mansion, therefore, is potentially infinite; the main requisites for a visit are a sharp eye and ear, a willingness to be surprised, and of course a sense of humour.
But these are only ways in: Joyce's writing can reveal sources of fascination and exhilaration which you were not expecting to find, and if you feel at times that Joyce is laughing at you just as much as you are laughing at him, you have begun to appreciate the delightfully unsettling energies of his art.

Farkas argues that ‘Burgess’s emigration [after 1968] could be seen as a Joycean, “Modernist”, gesture of a larger anti-philistine revolt [...] It is a central feature of the whole Burgess phenomenon that he was an artist-expatriate and a tax-exile at one and the same time’ (p.
The process by which Burgess subsequently turned himself into a fully-formed European writer is a different matter, of course, and it is a shame that Farkas does not illustrate it in greater detail when he goes on to discuss the extravagantly internationalist novels of the 1970s and 1980s, such as Napoleon Symphony and Earthly Powers.
Burgess’s protean self-reinventions as a stylist might in themselves be thought of as an important aspect of his Joycean inheritance, since neither Burgess nor Joyce deploys the same mode of narration in more than one novel.

Joycean allusion, political dialectic, Wildean paradox, Dadaist poetry – all are absorbed and transformed into a narrative that shimmers back and forth between 1917 and 1974, exposing art and politics to Stoppard’s ironic wit, and dazzling the imagination with endlessly inventive wordplay.
More on Joycean allusions in Stoppard may be read on the Fiction and Drama page.

 Hypermedia Joyce Studies about
It is now nine years since HJS was first conceived by Rob Callahan and myself, combining two separate projects focusing on broadening the potential for online publishing vis-a-vis Joyce studies, and on exploring the practical and theoretical implications of Joyce’s work for approaching hypertext or hypertextuality, and vice versa.
When Rob and I first met in propria persona, at the 1995 Providence Joyce conference, "Joycean hypertext" was only beginning to emerge as a descriptive term--descriptive, that is, of a particular quality in Joyce's writing (most explicitly Finnegans Wake).
The colloquium will focus on both the practical and theoretical concerns of Joycean genetics and hypertext, including the on-going publication of the Buffalo Finnegans Wake Notebooks, the Digital Ulysses project, and the recent acquisitions of Joyce notebooks by the National Library of Ireland.

 Joyce→ /Beckett/Joyce
Though his vision of that situation is perhaps more positive than Beckett’s, it is noteworthy that neither of them sees it as a heroic arena, that both find in it the detritus of life and of the living process, the picnic litter of past times’ pastimes.
This is of course only the sketchiest possible treatment of Joycean auto-generation/destruction, but it will enable us to compare and contrast it with Beckett’s use of a similar device for very different ends, noting that both writers draw much of their material from a text that perceptibly folds in on itself.
This is one of the miracles and joys of both the Beckettian and the Joycean text, the stillness comprised of motion.

After some shrewd comments on Beckett’s use of French and his ‘self-translations,’ Barbara Gluck turns to the three nouvelles, Premier amour and the trilogy, It is clear by now that the gospel according to Murphy, ‘in the beginning was the pun,’ no longer applies.
The Joycean echoes, parodies, and reverberations are radically muted and diminished.
It is evident once again that the stylistic influence of Joyce has largely disappeared in favor of Joycean structures and forms which acknowledge ‘the idea of the universe as a closed cyclical system.’(162) In this respect, for Gluck, the paradox of rejection and reaffirmation of Joyce carries into Beckett’s full maturity.

David Solway: Reading The Encyclopedia Dementia@Arts & Opinion
The Joycean desideratum of a lifelong reader is more than the amusing exaggeration many have taken it for.
Moreover, it is surely misleading (and possibly a function of animus) to dismiss Joyce as the bearer of an “average imagination,” despite Joyce's own self-suspicion on this count.
But to focus on the rationalist and memorial aspect of Joyce's writing is to strike at the Achilles heel of the entire Joycean project, namely, at the way in which it resembles a campaign, conscious, patient and systematic, against an adversary too inexhaustible to be decisively defeated.

Indeed, the film’s scenario is not entirely light-hearted; in exploiting the comic possibilities of repetition, it has simultaneously to touch on questions of individual destitution, suicide and mental breakdown.
If this cultural rupture is often considered the sign of a quintessentially modernist aesthetic, we shall show that it is best understood as corresponding to a properly theological concept of revelation: the idea that, as Giorgio Agamben writes, ‘all human speech and knowledge has at its root and foundation an openness that infinitely transcends it’.
And the crucial Joycean problem, as we shall see at the very end of our argument, is how to awaken from that dream.

For Maltby, the visionary moment is a more inclusive category than the Joycean notion of literary epiphany but a more limited category than mystical revelation.
Unlike the Joycean epiphany, the literary visionary moment "is not dependent on the catalytic effect of a commonplace object or mundane gesture or snatch of conversation"(13).
When comparing the visionary moment to Joycean epiphany, Maltby writes that the moment "is not dependent on the catalytic effect of a commonplace object or mundane gesture or snatch of conversation"; its stimulus is, rather, "a critical situation or incident that upsets a routine mindset" (13).

His understanding of the problems inherent in that model allows him to construct an alternative in which he celebrates the “Joycean knot.” His readings of language and religion in Joyce are especially valuable.
