Joyo 96 - Understanding Written Japanese
As it weaves interlocked threads of logic through the Jôyô Kanji, the ones essential to read a Japanese newspaper or business letter, it forms a story that is both comprehensible, and enjoyable.
The Kanji etymologies in Henshall were the single best way for me to understand Chinese characters.

But the best way to learn what kanji mean and thus remember them is by understanding the meaning their shape imparts to a given word.
The Kanji Way to Japanese Language Power does a good job of this, and is also a principle text of the Cross-Reference Tool for the Indexed Kanji References.
In addition to covering more kanji, another nice feature of this book is that each character is cross-referenced with the index number of the kanji in their other book: The Kanji Dictionary.

Because all kanji had a meaning, it was not always clear when they were used to represent meaning and when only sound.

 Nicolas Delerue, Book reviews
Some Japanese dictionaries order the kanjis by their pronunciation, using the consonant order, but this requires that one already knows the pronunciation of the kanji and is useless for foreigners learning Japanese.
When one knows the pronunciation of a Kanji, it is possible to search the kanji in the «On-kun» index which orders the kanjis by their pronunciation (and as a kanji can have different pronunciations, it may appear more than once in the index).
A few numbers are associated with each Kanji like its Unicode value (very useful if you have to type Kanji with a non-japanese Keyboard), its radical (so that if you had not been able to identify the radical, you can see what it is and learn for the next time) and its Joyo list number.

 About Kanji
In modern times, when Kanji are used in a word of native Japanese origin, the pronunciation of that character is called a Kun-yomi "reading", and is usually followed by an inflectional stem written with Hiragana script known as the Okurigana (or kana which follow).
In fact, "Shuo Wen Chie Tsu", the first Chinese dictionary and the earliest known text to study the pictorial origin of Chinese characters, was written in the 2nd century AD.
Pure phonetic characters, established as a sort of Kanji syllabary used to express verb inflection before the invention of the Kana.

One of my missions as a self-proclaimed kanji evangelist has been to exhort adult kanji learners to develop the ability to break visually complex characters down into easily remembered components.
Many of the components presented in component analysis learning materials are, in fact, "radicals," the 214 kanji elements traditionally used to classify characters in kanji dictionaries.
While most radicals--like the 30 examples above--are useful kanji memory aids, memorizing the entire 214-radical set is not a particularly efficient means of learning the shapes of joyo kanji.

In the immediate postwar period, the range of kanji used in newspapers and official publications was strongly restricted, by government-imposed guidelines, to the Joyo repertoire.
The number of kanji (and other characters) in common use in Japan appears to have been increasing since the 1980s, and some would argue that the Joyo and Gakushuu sets are less relevant now than they used to be.

The upshot of the above is that the student can learn the shapes of the joyo kanji in a short period of time, including stroke order.
The student will have only a general idea of the meanings of many kanji, and will have no idea of the 音読み(on pronunciation) or 訓読み (kun pronunciation), but he/she will have a foundation that is close to that of a student from a kanji-using culture.
Many kanji, despite having a certain phonetic component, (which the author calls "signal primitives”), do not have the 音読み normally associated with it, and these “stragglers” are listed in separate chapters.
