Buber's Basque Page: Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga Balzola
Arriaga explained the lessons with such competence that the masters Reicha, Catel, Boieldieu and others predicted that soon he would be "one of the principal professors of the Conservatorio".
Master Arriaga composed with  geniality and personality, as if he knew the works of Haydn and Mozart well; he hardly listened to Beethoven and even less to Schubert, whose work rarely was performed in the Parisian concerts of that period.
Since Arriaga began the string quartets in Vizcaya it is perfectly possible to assume that he had had no contact with the works of Beethoven or Schubert, an interesting question regarding his natural talent.

Juan Crisóstomo Jacomo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola
Arriaga has often been referred to as the "Spanish Mozart" for his precocity, for the coincidence that he was born on the 27th of January, 1806, exactly 50 years after Mozart's birthday, and for his early death.
Arriaga hails from Bilbao, the capital of Basque country, (the city proudly commemorates its most distinguished musical son with a public square, where the Teatro Arriaga is situated).
Arriaga's teacher in composing, the influential Francois-Joseph Fétis, was so happy with Arriaga's skills in harmony, counterpoints, and composition that he made Arriaga his teaching assistant at the age of 18, thus making Arriaga the youngest professor at the Conservatoire.

Remarkably, this is the second survey of Arriaga's three string quartets to have appeared in the last few months.
The last movement is an assured sonata-form study, with highly contrasted first and second themes and a "sting-in-the-tail" ending that makes an unexpectedly tragic conclusion to a work allegedly in a major key.

Even though Arriaga's symphony opens with a Haydnesque adagio, the clouds soon part and we are launched into an Allegro vivace that, even though there is the switching back and forth between major and minor, is so rhythmically animated one cannot but smile.

Juan Crisstomo de Arriaga (1806-1826) was, like Mozart, Mendelssohn and Korngold, a child prodigy composer.
Actually, though, the first has some formal attributes that are a bit unusual for a young composer of the classical school, and it seems clear that had he lived Arriaga would have developed further and possibly become one of the lights of the burgeoning Romantic school just taking off when he died.
Arriaga clearly had a talent for writing memorable melodies.
