Since Arriaga began the string quartets in Vizcaya it is perfectly possible to assume that he had had no contact with the works of Beethoven or Schubert, an interesting question regarding his natural talent.

Juan Crisóstomo Jacomo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Arriaga has often been referred to as the "Spanish Mozart" for his precocity, for the coincidence that he was born on the 27th of January, 1806, exactly 50 years after Mozart's birthday, and for his early death.
Arriaga hails from Bilbao, the capital of Basque country, (the city proudly commemorates its most distinguished musical son with a public square, where the Teatro Arriaga is situated).
Arriaga's teacher in composing, the influential Francois-Joseph Fétis, was so happy with Arriaga's skills in harmony, counterpoints, and composition that he made Arriaga his teaching assistant at the age of 18, thus making Arriaga the youngest professor at the Conservatoire.
