Molina first studied in Santiago and became a Jesuit when only fifteen.
Molina published his works in Italian; they all appeared at Bologna, the first one anonymously.
Molina was highly esteemed by the botanists; Schrank in 1789 named after him a genus of the Gramineæ, well known throughout Europe, Molinia; and Jussieu in the same year classified the genus Molinæa; other generic names (as Molina) are no longer used.

Ignacio's will was either written or entered into the Protocolos de Monterrey on the 20th of November of 1701 and it was recorded that he died on 7th of December of 1701 in Cerralvo.

MOLINA, Juan Ignacio, Chilian author, born near Talca, Chili, 24 June, 1740; died in Bologna, Italy, 12 September, 1829.
He became a member of the Society of Jesus at an early age, and at twenty was made librarian of his order in Santiago.
The narrative is based on documents, printed and in manuscript, and on an unpublished "History of Chili," by the Abblivares, the first part of which Molina took with him to Italy.
