"Son of the Bride," the new picture from Argentinean director Juan JosĀ» Campanella, is a foreign film with a very American feel.
A darkish comedy-drama about an embittered, selfish and generally unpleasant man's attempt to find some meaning in his sorry life and actually connect with those around him, the film is a Latin cousin to feel-good, stateside pictures like "As Good As It Gets" and "Life As a House".
But Campanella's script, co-written with his partner Fernando Castets, gets consistently more interesting as the film goes along, developing quirkier dialogue and effectively filling out secondary characters without ever slighting Rafael's own story.

Campanella's "The Son of the Bride" isn't unlike other various life-affirmation melodramas concerning the reawakening of a character to a life previously thought out of reach, but it does have enough perks to give the genre a breath of fresh air.
The film tells the story of Rafael Belvedere (Ricardo Dar?n), a 42-year-old restaurant owner who has little time for his daughter from a previous marriage, his girlfriend, Nati (Natalia Verbeke), or his family, including a mother belabored with Alzheimer's.
