PADILLA, JUAN DE [Padilla, Juan de], c.1490-1521, Spanish revolutionary leader in the war of the comuneros [municipalities] against Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
Padilla sought to legitimize the junta by securing the support of Charles's mad mother, Joanna, but the movement soon degenerated into class warfare.
Padilla's army was defeated at Villalar (Apr., 1521), and he was executed.

Three hundred Spainiards, including Padilla and three other Franciscans, accompanied Coronado on his quest for the Seven Cities of Gold, a mythical land of great wealth.
When Coronado abandoned his search, Padilla and others followed him to explore the Southwest, Padilla then becoming one of the first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon.to establish the first Christian mission in the Southwest.

While there are different versions of just how Padilla met his death, I think that the weight of authority shows that he was killed by Quivirans, although they might have tried to make it appear that their enemies killed him.
Much more would be known about Padilla and those early expeditions into Kansas, had it not been for the foolish destruction of great piles of invaluable historical manuscripts at Santa Fe a few years ago, where they were used to kindle fires and the remnant finally sold for junk.
If they were hereditary enemies of the Quivirans in 1601, they were doubtless their enemies fifty or sixty years before that time, or at the time that Padilla went on his mission to the Quivirans, when he lost his life in attempting to carry the story of the Cross to their enemies.

No one is slagging Padilla for the great performance that he had last year, we’re just wondering how likely it is he’ll be able to keep it up, and history says that there’s a good bet he will regress.
