Juan D'Vaughn Pierre (born August 14, 1977 in Mobile, Alabama), is a professional baseball center fielder for the Chicago Cubs.
Juan became a fan favorite early in his career because of his speed and durability.
He led the National League in stolen bases in 2001 and 2003 and stole at least 45 bases each year from 2001 to 2005; because of his great speed and ability for contact hitting, he is one of the best leadoff hitters in baseball.

The Weblog That Derek Built: Juan Pierre...or, the Ambiguities
Juan Pierre is not Bernie Williams in that he is nine years younger than the outgoing Yankee centerfielder, and far more healthy--Pierre has played 162 game per year, for the last three years running.
The diametric opposite of Fielder, Pierre is greased lightning on the bases (267 SB in his career, good 73.6% success rate), but a dead duck in any home run derby (he's averaging roughly 1 homer per every 95 games; career.375 SLG in a career that included a few years in Colorado).
Pierre is the type of player who has been the bane of stathead existence since Bill James first started writing his Abstracts in the 70s--the low-power, low-walks "hitter" whose offensive value is primarily in his batting average.

The Cub Reporter: Cubs Trade for Pierre   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
I’ve posted before why I believe Juan Pierre is not the best choice to be the Cubs lead-off hitter and CF next season (I suspect he will be a “one-year rental,” so the Cubs are going to have to look for a lead-off hitter again next year).
As far as Pierre is concerned, he apparently is a good guy and a durable player, somebody who rarely takes a walk but who also doesn’t strike out much, and he steals a lot of bases and thus puts pressure on the opposing battery, which (hopefully) means more fastballs for the Cubs 3-4-5 hitters.
Pierre is not, and will not be, the best CF in the league, but he maximizes his talent and fills a role that the Cubs have desperately needed.
