  Juan Ruiz - LoveToKnow 1911
Ruiz is by far the most eminent poet of medieval Spain.
Ruiz, in fact, offers a complete picture of picaresque society in Spain during the first half of the 14th century, and his impartial irony lends a deeper tone to his rich colouring.
Ruiz is mentioned with respect by Santillana, and that his reputation extended beyond Spain is proved by the surviving fragments of a Portuguese version of the Libro de buen amor.

 Juan Ruiz Criticism and Essays
From Ruiz's writing scholars gather that he was educated in the standard medieval trivium of grammar, rhetoric, and logic; there is also evidence that he was educated as a priest in Toledo, Spain, at the city's cathedral school.
Ruiz's characters are for the most part commoners rather than aristocrats or royalty, as was typical for literature of the time.
Read finds a major conflict of Ruiz's work to have its basis in differing philosophies of language, one of which holds that words are God-given and correspond with the things they signify while the other assumes that the meaning of words derives from context and convention.

Juan Ruiz's Heterosexual "Good Love", by Daniel Eisenberg
Juan Ruiz is indeed opposed to celibacy, of both nuns and priests.
Juan Ruiz says, in conclusion, "fizvos pequeño libro de testo, mas la glosa...es bien grand prosa" (1631ab) [I made you a small textbook, but the gloss...is a long piece of prose].
For example, "behind Juan Ruiz resounds the echo of a long tradition of Hispano-Islamic literary pride" (Castro 412); "his art consisted in harmonizing in a Castilian and Christian fashion the two fundamental tendencies in Arabic literature of the preceding centuries, sensuality and moral exemplarity" (Castro 442).

Juan Ruiz Biography | Encyclopedia of World Biography
Practically nothing is known of the life of Juan Ruiz except for what can be reconstructed from his poem.
Lastly, the colophon to one of the manuscripts in which Ruiz's poem has survived explains that the work was composed while its author was in prison by order of Gil Álvarez Carrillo de Albornoz, Archbishop of Toledo.
Ruiz's poetic imagination and individualism were such, however, that no poetic tradition or literary theme employed by him has remained the same after his treatment of it.

 Juan Ruiz at AllExperts
Though his birth name is known to be Juan Ruiz, he is widely referred to using his title Arcipreste de Hita, which translates to "archpriest of Hita."
According to his own book, he was imprisoned for years, thought to be between 1337 to 1350, as punishment for some of his deeds (if the poem is any guide, they were quite inconsistent with his position as priest).
In retaliation, he wrote Libro de Buen Amor (Book of Good Love), a massive, episodic work that chronicled much of medieval society through his eyes: ancient fables, ugly peasants, Ruiz's amorous dalliances with, and what seems to be sincere religious fervor.
