Molina's music is as "pure" in its creation and performance as any contemporary music ever made, and it would be a serious mistake to lop her in with the many hopelessly inferior and mediocre light-alt pop-folk singers/songwriters now cluttering up contemporary mainstream airwaves and in heavy video rotation on VH1.
Molina's very first album, Rara (1996), was (as to be expected) maligned on release as a standard celeb-ego foray and is still widely looked back as being her initial creative concession to the musical mainstream; while it lacks the stunning creative vision of her ensuing music, it's actually a very enjoyable piece of straightforward folk-rock.
Molina and her peers follow their supremely original artistic muses wherever they will, and we as listeners are only too lucky to be invited along on that voyage of musical discovery.

Molina also made use of a digital delay to loop her guitar lines and a synth of her own which she used primarily to create percussive effects.
Molina's Spanish language web site reveals that she is Buenos Aires-born and, despite her long-standing career as a singer/songwriter, she is perhaps better known to fellow Argentineans as a TV comedienne.
To be introduced to a marvelous new artist (at least to us here in the USA) like Juana Molina and to see a true icon proving that an artist can continue to grow and move forward without denying or abandoning their past was an unadulterated treat.

Turning her back on her previous career, Juana’s music flows from her acoustic guitar, off-kilter electronic sounds and rhythms and a vast, strangely comforting plethora of noises from flora and fauna, while her voice is soothing and mesmeric.
Juana explains: "My father taught me to play guitar when I was five and I've been in a musical ambience all my life.
Back in Buenos Aires, Juana became a singer in various bands, but feeling like she needed to brush up her guitar playing, she had to come up with some money for lessons.

Son by Juana Molina on Rhapsody   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Juana Molina may tote an acoustic guitar around, but she isn't exactly a singer-songwriter.
Molina can pen a solid tune (listen to the title track or to "Un Beso Llega"), but she uses her songs more as launching pads for exploring sound and texture.
Molina often gets compared to Beth Orton, but she ends up more like Beck -- if he had the courage to merge his sensitive folky and ironic sonic explorer sides.

Juana Molina: Tres Cosas: Pitchfork Record Review
Tres Cosas is Molina's third full-length since she abandoned television outright in the mid-90s, but her past as a successful comedian still clings closely to her brand.
Part of Molina's appeal-- and this is what's getting her namechecked by more than just the world music set-- lies in the way her songs incorporate subtle additions like xylophones, strings, synths, loops and ambient washes without ever changing shape.
Because Molina's compositions tend to be guided by stream of consciousness, sing-songy word trails, some of them need lots of time to fully take root; others-- like the clumsy "El Cristal"-- may never germinate at all.

 * Dusted Reviews - Juana Molina *
Son is Molina’s third album for Domino, the third that she made at home and mostly on her own, and her best to date; the songs are simultaneously more richly detailed and more succinct than those on Segundo and Tres Cosas.
Molina sails nimble forays into whistling, scatting, and ersatz Indian vocal percussion that flow like the wind over a contoured landscape of old-school synth blips, acoustic guitar figures, pulsing, low-key beats, and metallic percussion treated so it melts into the keyboard tones.
Molina spent part of her childhood in exile in Europe, and the Beatles and King Crimson spent a lot of time on her turntable; bossa nova sensuality, proggy architectural aspirations, and an unambiguous appreciation for tunes that stuck in your head are all part of her musical DNA.

 MAGNET Interview: Juana Molina
Molina isn’t creating melodrama out of molehills as she discusses her music in a hotel on New York’s Lower East Side.
(Molina starred on Argentine sketch-comedy TV hit Juana Y Sus Hermanas in the ’90s before turning her back on acting.) It’s a place where having a child didn’t hinder, but rather fostered, a career in music.
Molina’s fourth album, Son (Domino), is based on the sounds of nature.

Muzzle of Bees » Juana Molina - Sun
When I first heard about Juana Molina, I was really hoping she would be the female version of Jason Molina.
There are certain songs that I could easily classify as straightforward folk music, and then Juana will add some layers of horns or other instrumentals and vocals that take tracks in a completely different direction. The fourth track in particular sounds like she incorporated a choir of kittens to “meow” in harmony.
Juana is currently on tour with Jose Gonzalez, so make sure to catch them if they swing through your town.

 * Dusted Reviews - Juana Molina *
If the cover art on her first two US albums is any indication, Juana Molina wishes to remain something of an enigma: 2003’s Segundo pictured her face concealed behind a formidable blond mane, while her latest, Tres Cosas reveals only her silhouette, its shadowy features distorted into a grotesque carnival mask.
While Molina’s austere compositions and arrangements come across as somewhat dry and self-indulgent at first, their stylistic coherence reveals a strikingly well-developed aesthetic.
Like both of these artists, Juana Molina is a natural born iconoclast, capable of developing a totally personal aesthetic that defies comparison and categorization.

Molina also runs up against the common complaint with her music.

A shimmy of mild electronics, acoustics, and Molina’s cactusdew voice, the album’s sixty-nine minutes were easily excused, like a siesta in which you move towards the midday sting and somehow find it cooler, an emptied hourglass.
“Rio Seco”’s tonsil-pulp synths bring one of Molina’s more urgent guitar compositions to the fore, while “Yo No” may well be the sound of dogs chasing the sun home for the eve, with its punchy vibes and lockstep tribal drum patterns, its huffing and puffing and a female chorus to blow the candles out.

To kick things off, Juana Molina is one musician who keeps sparking my fancy every time I hear her music.
She has a very light, but sultry voice that is reminiscent of other South American sirens: Bebel Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Beth Carvalho of Conjunto 3D, Silvana Malta, and Sabina Sciubba (Alright she’s not from South America, but her band’s called Brazilian Girls, c’mon!).
Juana’s sound is stripped down to a handful of basic instruments that texture the background of her delicate vocals.

Molina has won acclaim from many quarters for her unique style - breathy, acoustic Spanish folk subjected to heavy digital processing -and on 'Son' ("Sound") she turns in more of the same.
This time, however, a lessening of the electronic elements gives the album a more organic feel, and the sound is somehow simultaneously more expansive and more intimate.
Not renouncing her Argentinean moods, Molina chooses here to explore wilder shores of Folk, somewhat reminiscent of Animal Colective o Devendra Banhart in subdue moments.

Juana Molina: Son - PopMatters Music Review
Apparently Juana Molina had trouble, at first, convincing the Argentinean public to take her seriously as a musician.
Reviews of her past albums have compared her to Björk, and Son shares a tiny bit of vocabulary with Vespertine, which was also a home-cooked affair—they both use a soft-edged blattering keyboard effect that sounds intimate and organic.
I can listen to someone say that Björk is pretentious and understand where they’re coming from, even if I don’t agree, but to hear Juana Molina called pretentious would be jarring.

It may have been a risk, but Juana Molina clearly made the right choice when she quit her cushy job as an Argentinian TV star to pursue music.
Despite Son's playful and unconventional nature, the whole thing has a slightly somber feeling to it, mainly owing to the delicate way in which Molina delivers her lyrics (which are all in Spanish).
But Son ultimately remains a charming and intriguing listen and should please anyone, from the most docile Nick Drake fan to a spazzed-out Animal Collective freak searching for a musical sedative.
