Juanes was born Juan Esteban Aristizabel in Medellin, Colombia.
Over his years in Colombia, Juanes experienced firsthand the grief that comes with personal loss from violence, as kidnappers executed his cousin (even after a ransom had been paid) and another close friend was killed by gunmen in a nightclub.
Musically fusing Juanes' highly accomplished guitar work with multiple Latin rhythm styles from his native Colombia, while also showcasing deeply introspective lyrics examining violence, social conscience and the loss of loved ones, Juanes' "Fijate Bien" is obviously a landmark album for the growing Latin Alternative genre.

I first saw and heard Juanes performing his single 'La Camisa Negra' on a show on which he'd also reported on the worlds perception of Columbia, his country of birth, and I really didn't realise or appreciate who he was.
The album produced by Gustavo Santaolalla (Surco Studios) is heavy on the guitar and electronic guitar riffs and this is no surprise as Juanes lists Metallica as one of his inspirations.
Juanes rode on the crest of Latin music's acceptance by the mainstream in the late 90's but he differentiated himself by not translating from his native Spanish to English for approval.

Tower Records - Un Dia Normal - Juanes
Refusing to play the Latin pop crossover game, Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes returns with UN DIA NORMAL, a second solo album sung entirely in Spanish that manages to kick the idea of sophomore jinx square in the jewels.
About the only concession Juanes makes to courting crossover success is "Fotografia," a ballad with Nelly Furtado, a native Portuguese speaker who does well in switching gears to sing in Spanish.
With Juanes drawing from such a broad palette of music, UN DIA NORMAL expands the boundaries of Rock En Espanol to the point where these kinds of varied approaches will hopefully someday be the norm.
