Jubilee quartet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jubilee quartets were popular African-American religious musical groups in the first half of the twentieth century.
The name derives from the Fisk Jubilee Quartet, a group of male singers organized by students at Fisk University in 1905 to sing Negro spirituals, which had typically been sung by mixed choirs before then.
In time, however, the popularity of the jubilee style spread from the universities to fl churches, where quartets, singing before audiences with a tradition of enthusiastic response, began to absorb much of the energy and freedom of gospel music coming out of Holiness churches.

At a time when most fl music was being performed by white minstrel musicians in flface and vulgar caricature, a small group of exceptionally well-trained and talented fl singers at Fisk University in Nashville achieved world-wide renown for their stirring and very professional performance of traditional fl spirituals.
Originally, the group was composed of two quartets and a pianist, a woman named Wells, under the direction of the University musical director, George L. White.
In terms of musical history, the primary significance of the Jubilee Singers is that they introduced to the world for the first time a magnificent body of folk music -- slave songs, spirituals -- which celebrated life, survival, victory.

Typically the quartet performed at school fund-raisers, though by 1902 the members had moved to the vaudeville stage."' Like other similar quartets, the Dinwiddie group was formed for at least two reasons: if jubilee groups could raise money for their sponsoring institutions, then quartets could do the same at a much smaller cost.
The success of these early quartet records inspired the companies to explore this genre, and dozens of community and semiprofessional quartets eventually recorded at the permanent studios or the southern field sessions that became common practice among record companies by the late 1920s.
Thus fl gospel quartet singing began its rapid transformation from a religious, regional genre to a form of popular entertainment that was slowly crossing the invisible borders that demarcate the United States along racial and geographical lines.
