Jud Larson spent 27 of his 43 years on this earth driving race cars, I doubt if a record exists today of how many hundreds of races he won or lost.
Jud hit the "big time" at the Hoosier Hundred in 1956 and led most of his first USAC race until a broken shock slowed the likable giant to a fourth place finish.
Jud Larson was truly a man who didn't fear dying so much that he was afraid to live.

Jud Larson (January 21, 1923 - June 11, 1966) was an American racecar driver.
Born in Grand Prairie, Texas, Larson died in Reading, Pennsylvania as a result of injuries sustained in a sprint car crash which allso claimed the life of Red Riegel.
He drove in the USAC Championship Car series, racing in the 1956-1959 and 1964-1965 seasons with 53 starts, including the 1958 and 1959 Indianapolis 500 races.

After recording a pair of USAC Sprint wins in 1999 and single victories in 2000 and 2001, the New Castle, Indiana veteran failed to cash in on a victory on Eldora’s high-banked one-half mile clay oval last year.
Branson and Larson had contributed greatly to the growth and popularity of USAC Sprint racing during their careers.
Perhaps the most significant factor weighing into the early April contest (the first of five USAC Sprint events in 2003) is that many drivers will be getting valuable track time and recording notes in anticipation of the Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora, slated for September 19 and 20.

 Famed Indy Car Owner John S. Zink Dies
Somewhat following in the footsteps of his father, John S. Zink Sr., who had sponsored a car driven by Cecil Green in 1950 and 1951, Jack Zink arrived with his operation in 1952 and with a driver even younger than himself - 22-year-old Jimmy Reece.
John Zink Specials won 13 National Championship races between 1955 and 1966, four each with Jud Larson and Jim McElreath, two each with Sweikert and Flaherty, and one with Lloyd Ruby.
The victories by Sweikert, Flaherty, Larson and Rathmann came with A.J. Watson as chief mechanic, while the victories of Ruby and McElreath were wrenched by Denny Moore.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the first Hawkeye Futurity held in June 1955.
The first winner was Jud Larson in the Tom Randol Offy; Jud won in 1956 also.
Tom Randol's son Mark has replicated his car, even though it has some of the original parts such as the engine, grill, & several other parts, it still has to be called a replica as not enough of the chassis was left to call it original.

For those that aren't aware of it, Jud did not survive a USAC Sprint car crash in Reading Pennsylvania.

Jun 9 2005, 09:18 PM i remember reading a story on jud where his favorite track was a rocky track-bigger the rock the better-he said you could throw a rock off your tire and hit the guy behind you and break his nose sometimes if he was hot on your tail
