Jude is a 1996 English film, based on the novel Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy and directed by Michael Winterbottom.
In the Victorian period, Jude Fawley is a young man with dreams of receiving a scholarly university education.
This is the first film that Michael Winterbottom had directed from a novel by Thomas Hardy; the second was the romance film The Claim (2000).

Jude grew up in Blackhealth, South London and started working at the National Youth Music Theatre between 1987 and 1990 (one of his roles while there was the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).
Jude Law began his stage career in 1993, touring Italy as Freddie in a production of Pygmalion, and his theatre work has included the premieres of The Fastest Clock in the Universe and The Snow Orchid, the Royal Court revival of Live Like Pigs, and the West Yorkshire Playhouse production of Death of a Salesman.

Jude received many plaudits for his efforts, including a Golden Globe nomination, having made Joe a theatrically overblown creature, prone to camp and the odd dance (for which Jude trained for 3 months in ballet, tap and Kabuki).
Based on the novel by Charles Frazier, this saw Jude as Confederate soldier Inman, traumatised by witnessing one of the Civil War's most dreadful massacres and on a dangerous journey back to his mountain home and (hopefully) the arms of his pre-war preacher's daughter sweet-heart Ada.

Jude has to deal with the subjects it does in the manner it does so: it would not be the masterpiece it is otherwise.
That youngster - Jude - thereafter strives to better himself, with the aim of becoming a student or professor at Christminster (a fictional Oxford or Cambridge).
Coupled with this, the grand orchestral score (very audible throughout the film but never obtrusive) accentuates and complements the drama on-screen perfectly: it is some of the best in-film music I have heard.

The film opens in fl and white with Jude as a young boy dwarfed by the stone buildings of his village and oppressed by the camera's framing, which keeps the landscape in the forefront and leaves very little sky.
When Christopher Eccleston steps in as the adult Jude, the film turns to color, and the mood brightens briefly as a flirtacious Arabella tries to attract his attention by playfully throwing the offal she had been washing in the stream - a foreshadowing of the pig slaying that will offend Jude's sensibilities.

Jude, by comparison, isn't really a love story, but it is certainly a story about what love can do to you.
Much of Jude is fairly bald melodrama, and I'll admit to stifling several giggles, most notably when Jude's ailing aunt (June Whitfield), disdainful of his conduct in matters of the heart, twists the knife in his gut by calling him a "ninny." Fate is cruel, and to Jude it is the cruelest.
Jude makes stark, effective use of the wide screen and calls hardly any attention to itself as a period piece.

Because Jude Law is, well, Jude Law, you can see why he gets away with it as long as he does, and the actor also pulls off the usually awkward trick of narrating directly to the camera.
The film, meanwhile, is a bit soft around the edges; the whole thing would have more resonance if it wasn't quite so intent on watching the unrepentant repent.
Jude Law does an excellent job portraying a man who is much more complex than it might seem - and he manages to make all of his little soliloquies to the audience very effective, as they basically provide the insight into whatever soul is lurking behind Alfie's charm and carefree attitude.

Gallipoli is one of my favorite Aussie films (though I often get it confused with The Lighthorse Brigade, as I think I saw them at about the same time when I was young).
Even though I am the complete couch patatoe when watching films, getting my enjoyment from the least amount of mental effort possible, I like movies that have more in them, as I find that they are generally better thought out and of a higher quality, and so I like these aspects explored in a review.
This is indeed a devastating film, and one which caused me to follow a young Peter Weir's directorial career from that point.

Somehow, however, the film never delivers the punch deserved by one of the 19th century's most movingly cruel English novels.
The leads, too, lack the chemistry to render the tragic outcome of Jude and Sue's socially unacceptable amour fou as devastating as it should be; Eccleston is too relentlessly 'intense' for Jude to seem a truly attractive prospect, while Winslet's Sue is such a thoroughly modern miss that she finally fails to convince.
Eduardo Serra's 'Scope camerawork is eye-catching, and the film is never stilted, but it's hard to see how its emphasis on being 'modern' make the content really relevant to today.
