Judith McConnell, assistant professor of psychology, has been named director of the Counseling and Testing Center in the Division of Student Development.
McConnell joined the center in 1991 as assistant director and has led the program's efforts and activities as the interim director since 1998.
McConnell earned her bachelor's degree in secondary education, master's degree in guidance and counseling, and doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Texas AandM.

 San Diego's McConnell Tapped for 4th District
McConnell's critics accused her at the time of being a gay rights activist because of a 1987 ruling in which she awarded custody of a teen-ager to his late father's male partner rather than his mother.
McConnell said she expects to miss the courtroom interaction with the public and jurors.
McConnell currently handles a direct calendar civil court in San Diego and is the county's designated judge for environmental impact disputes.

Judith McConnell was confirmed and sworn in yesterday as a justice of the Fourth District Court of Appeal’s Div.
McConnell was praised by fellow jurists as courageous, honest and hardworking judge who was well-regarded and would serve with distinction on the San Diego-based court.
DiMare called McConnell “a corrupt judge” who was part of “a cabal of dishonest judges”—one that included three former members of her court who were sentenced to federal prison—and who was “controlled by Gray Cary,” the firm that represented her opposition in one of the Chopra suits.

She rebutted specific allegations that she had been the target of federal and state corruption investigations and noted that she had disclosed stock in a company in which a board member was also before her in court.
McConnell also noted that she recused herself from one Chopra case the day trial was to begin because of a constant barrage of personal attacks.
McConnell's nomination to the federal bench was derailed after conservatives lambasted her 1987 decision to grant a gay man guardianship over his deceased partner's teen-age son, rather than give custody to the natural mother.

 Judge in gay custody case picked for appellate court
A San Diego judge whose candidacy for a federal judgeship was derailed by conservatives angered by her ruling in a gay custody case has been nominated to a state appellate court by Gov. Gray Davis.
McConnell, 57, is a University of California at Berkeley graduate and a former president of the National Association of Women Judges.
McConnell said yesterday she was honored by Davis' endorsement and looked forward to having "some voice in the future of the law" on the appellate court.

In October of 1997, Judge McConnell ruled that the county’s EIR was inadequate and ruled against the county in nine significant areas.

 McConnell ‘Well-Qualified’ for Appeal Post—JNE Panel
Fourth District Court of Appeal nominee Judith McConnell will go into her confirmation hearing tomorrow armed with a “well-qualified” rating from the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation but will also face a detractor unhappy with the judge’s rulings in a lawsuit involving celebrity author Deepak Chopra.
McConnell is “intelligent; hardworking; possesses a wide range of judicial experience as a trial judge since 1978; courageous in ruling on difficult issues; a leader in eliminating bias in the judicial system; enjoys an exceptional reputation with the bench and bar,” the JNE report said.
She said she was investigated by the FBI only as a routine part of her 1993 nomination to the federal bench.

Gov. Gray Davis has nominated a longtime San Diego jurist to lead the local state appeals court, and a North County judge to fill a vacancy on the appeals panel.
Justice Judith McConnell ['69] would preside over the San Diego-based 4th District Court of Appeal, Division One, to which she was appointed in 2001 after 23 years as a San Diego judge.
McConnell, 59, is a graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law, while Irion, 50, earned her law degree at the UC-Davis King Hall School of Law.
