Tarr chooses to follow several different characters from different societies, demonstrating the variety in her neolithic civilization.
Tarr's use of Indian-sounding names is a constant reminder that the majority of modern European languages came from the root Indo-European language.
Nevertheless, it is to Tarr's credit that, although her characters seem obsessed with sex and rut around as if there were no tomorrow, the author doesn't go into details, merely acknowledging the occurrences and treating them as a normal part of her civilization.

The fantastic may be subsidiary to fact in Tarr's (Kingdom of the Grail) latest historical fantasy, but it lends an eerily beautiful, sometimes frightening undercurrent to this engrossing, thoroughly satisfying novel, set in the late 12th century.
Tarr smoothly blends a dazzling array of characters from both history and myth: Eleanor of Acquitaine, her "face still beautiful, like a wood in winter, stripped of all its softness"; Philip of France, who after abandoning Richard in Palestine seeks to invade Britain; "Robin o' the Wood...

 Judith Tarr: King and Goddess
From her recent output, it seems Judith Tarr has turned her back on fantasy novels, such as Alamut and The Hall of the Mountain King, in favor of writing nearly straight Egyptian historical fiction.
Partly this is caused by the fact that so much of these interactions take place off stage or as glossed over by Tarr, but Tarr's treatment of her characters is much more narrative than it could otherwise be.

Judith Tarr, Devil's Bargain / House of War / Pride of Kings
While Judith Tarr's novels Devil's Bargain, House of War, and Pride of Kings are supposedly historical fantasies dealing with the Crusades, one of the most bloody, savage, and violent episodes of our history, the books are disappointingly tame, boring, naïve, and biased.
However, in a rather disconcerting contradiction, Judith Tarr, who provides an intelligent and fair-minded view of Islam and paganism in these novels, is disappointingly biased against Christianity.
I wish Tarr could have gone into a little greater detail of how magic worked for the characters, but as it is, the fantastical elements seem stale and overused.

 Raven's Reviews: Judith Tarr
Although I've seen at least three other books Tarr has written, I've been reluctant to read them because The Hound and the Falcon was so well done, and there is nothing more she could have said about the main character, whom I love.
In Tarr's history (which apart from the elves is accurate and extremely well-done) there are changelings, elves, who appear either as orphans or as children of human parents.
Tarr has a knack for weaving history and fantasy that makes it easy to believe in Alf as part of our own history, and a sure grasp of the Catholic Church and its influence in this time period, not to mention a wonderful set of characters.

After the brilliant, subtle Pride of Kings (2001), in which England's Prince John refreshingly proved to be a hero rather than a villain, Judith Tarr stumbles in her latest alternative historical fantasy, Devil's Bargain, which concerns King Richard and the Third Crusade.
Tarr (Pride of Kings; Kingdom of the Grail) crafts an alternate history of the First Crusade that blends magic and myth with meticulously researched historical fact to create a tale of romance and intrigue that belongs in most libraries.
As Tarr notes in the Author's Note, the Third Crusade was something of a let-down.

Author Judith Tarr paints a wonderful picture of an alternate history where magic is real, where Richard found a compromise in his crusade and built a crusader nation that welcomes people of many faiths, and where Christian, Jewish, Moslem, and pagan magicians strive in the perpetual battle against evil.
Tarr's skillful use of the danger to Siomed's children increases the story's emotional intensity as does the growing affection between Mustafa and Giuliano.

 The Fiction of Judith Tarr
Whether or not, for instance, there actually were cities in Old Europe remains in question among historians, but not for Tarr, who finds the stuff of epic much livelier here as she's cut loose from her usually lackluster limning of figures like Alexander the Great, Akhenaten, and Hatshepsut.
Tarr weaves into the fabric of the strange facts of this ruler's life such arresting fictional threads as the story of the commoner Senenmut, son of a pot seller, who becomes Hatshepsut's confidant and secret lover as well as her chief servant and overseer.
Tarr is consistently competent or better in all the essentials of fantasy saga construction--characterization, world building, a system of magic, and, of course, prose.

Tarr presents an alternate history to the reign of Richard the Lionheart, in which he is King of England as well as Jerusalem.
Tarr blends the colours of historical facts with the richness of a magical plot, and the reluctant Richard must again rely on magic, which he detests, to try and win the war against Evil.
The emotions and arguments seem so real, the war scenes are bloodily descriptive and the romantic interludes exquisitely tender, while the evil exudes horror and despair throughout and threads of magic hold the story together with vibrant colour.

It's a tribute to Tarr's ability that, while the novel ends with enough loose ends to indicate the direction of this continuing series, the book can also stand alone.
