It functioned as a mission church, stabilizing the neighborhood at the point of transition between the upper class area of the Square and the poorer neighborhood immediately to the west.
The church is an eclectic composite of Byzantine, Romanesque and Renaissance forms, built in thin Roman brick embellished with terra-cotta, marble and limestone ornament.
Judson's connections also enabled him to recruit John LaFarge for the stained glass windows and Herbert Adams for the marble relief on the chancel's south wall (produced according to plans by Saint-Gaudens).

Judson Memorial Church, founded in 1892, has been called "the conscience of Greenwich Village." It has a long history of commitment to social and political activism; the Judson Poets' Theatre and Judson Dance Theatre were leading voices in the avant-garde movement of the 1960's and '70's.
Rauschenbusch Memorial Church, affiliated with the United Church of Christ, was also active in theater and the arts.
Carmines was minister at Judson from 1961 to 1981; in 1982, he became minister of Rauschenbusch.

 Stained Glass Restoration, Judson Memorial Church, New York
The building of Judson Memorial Church was commissioned in 1888 by Rev. Edward Judson as a memorial to his father, Adoniram Judson, an important Baptist missionary to Burma.
With funding from John D. Rockefeller, Sr., Edward Judson hired the eminent architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White to construct the Renaissance-style yellow-brick and terra cotta church with its prominent campanile gracing Washington Square Park.
In 1994, the church was the beneficiary of a bequest that provided almost half of the money required, and at that time, they contracted with Julie Sloan to specify and manage the restoration of all of the windows, not only the seven in storage.

Judson Memorial Church and Judson Hall and Tower were built in 1892 on the designs of McKim, Mead and White.
It would not be just an ordinary church but an institutional church, with all the facilities and activities of a settlement house.
La Farge designed glass windows which are still in the church, and Herbert Adams, sculptor of the bronze figure of William Cullen Bryant in Bryant Park, did a relief for the chancel.

John LaFarge designed the seventeen stained glass windows in Judson Memorial Church, a project that illustrated the artistic unity of all the windows to each other and to the structure as a whole.
The three windows of the facade wall depict Peter, Paul and John the Evangelist and each memorialize distinguished Baptist leaders of the nineteenth century.
It was determined in 1990 that the treasured stained glass of Judson suffered from wear and age, prompting a large restoration project of all the Church’s windows.

The Judson Memorial Church congregation, led by the newly appointed senior minister, Reverend Donna Schaper, will return on Sunday morning March 26 to the building’s sanctuary on Washington Square South after an 11-month absence during a renovation of the historic building.
Judson’s reconstruction began in the early 1990s when the terra-cotta facade and roof were restored.
A native of New York City, her 30-year ministry in the United Church of Christ, included posts in Tucson, Ariz.; Philadelphia; Amherst, Mass.; Riverhead, L.I.; and the Coral Gables Congregational Church near Miami where she was senior minister from 2000 to 2005.

Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village has agreed to give its extensive archives to the Fales Collection of the New York University Libraries.
For years the church struggled on its own to organize and preserve the welter of materials in its storerooms, but the task seemed to be outgrowing the capacities of volunteer archivists.
They document Judson’s involvement in the early civil rights movement, the antiwar movement, and the women’s movement – including the fight for abortion rights—as well as the revolt against the old Tammany machine that led to the formation of the Village Independent Democrats and its successor reform clubs.

The Movement Research at the Judson Church series, in its 14th season in 2005/06, is one of a number of MR programs intended to foster rigorous and wide-ranging artistic investigations that are movement-based, but that can incorporate other disciplines and collaborations.
MR functions within the wider ecology of dance to nurture experimentation in movement-based forms, and inform the innovative work that is later produced on larger presenting organizations’ stages and in non-traditional venues, here and abroad.
Artists are selected by a rotating peer panel that is comprised of 3-5 artists and meets twice yearly (for 2004/05 the panel met once for the three-month series, given construction at the Judson Church).
