Originally Peter Ellstrom Deuel, he was born in Rochester, New York, and arrived in Hollywood in 1963.
His first major television appearance was in the comedy series Gidget (1965), starring a young Sally Field, followed by the 1967 situation comedy, Love on a Rooftop, opposite Judy Carne.
Having changed the spelling of his name, he finally made an international impact when he was cast as the outlaw Hannibal Heyes/Joshua Smith in 1970 in a light-hearted comedy western loosely based on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
