In the 2003 provincial election, Marsales ran as a Liberal in the open seat of Hamilton West (previously held by New Democrat David Christopherson, who was not seeking re-election).

Marsales' riding includes Westdale, where residents are outraged at assessment increases in the double digits, driven partly by sales of area homes for student housing.
Marsales said the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) needs to differentiate between types of properties, particularly in Westdale, where student housing is driving assessment increases, therefore increasing tax levies.
