Date : 12/21/2006 Time : 6:55:43 PM The butternut, Juglans cinerea (family Juglandaceae, order Juglandales), is a large tree that reaches a height of 30 m (100 ft); it has gray bark and 11-19 oblong and pointed leaflets.
It is one of the hardiest northern NUT trees but is frequently short-lived because of its susceptibility to fungal and virus bunch diseases.
Fruits are 5-10 cm (2-4 in) in length with four distinct, irregular ribs, and a sticky pubescent husk surrounding a thick shell containing a high-quality kernel.

In the older Cronquist system, these plants were split into three different orders, placed among the Hamamelidae.
The Casuarinales comprised the single family Casuarinaceae, the Juglandales comprised the Juglandaceae and Rhoipteleaceae, and the Myricales comprised the remaining forms (plus Belanops).
The change is due to studies suggesting that the Myricales, so defined, are paraphyletic to the other two groups.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Hamamelididae -- Spring 1998
They suggest the families should be divided into two orders, the Fagales and a second based on Nothofagus that is not yet published (although the name was inappropriately allowed to be used in their articles by the editors of the journal).
I prefer to retain the Nothofagaceae in the Juglandales believing the call for a new order is a product of the cladogram rather than a morphologically, independently evolved and distinct unit.
As noted previously, the disposition of the Juglandanae in the Hamamelididae is done with some trepidation knowing full well that the taxon may be better placed in the Dilleniidae.

 Botanik online: Hamamelididae - Juglandales
