Topic: Jugulator

In the News (Sun 27 Dec 09)

Jugulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jugulator is the 13th studio album by British heavy metal band Judas Priest, and the first featuring vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens.
Reaction to the album was roughly divided among those who enjoyed the album on its own terms, those who liked the music but preferred that Rob Halford would sing it, and those who disliked it on all counts.
The Jugulator is about a machine, part machine, part demonic, designed to kill all the left over humans who were not saved by the rapture by the Painkiller.

RevelationZ Magazine - Album Review - Judas Priest - Jugulator
Jugulator then stands for another and perhaps the most far-reaching new direction in the band's history.
When I saw Priest live on the Jugulator tour, I was very impressed by the amount of both intensity in their playing and the positive vibe coming from the stage.
Jugulator is one of the most important, intense and vigorous albums I got, but its not only brutal, well played and inspiring, it’s also filled with pure magical passages and lyrics that are important and meaningful.

Demolition (Judas Priest album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Following the lukewarm reception to Jugulator, the band scrambled to assess what exactly went wrong and determined that fans preferred a sound more faithful to Priest's back catalogue.
The resulting album would be an amalgam of Jugulator-style riffs, references to 80s Priest, and sporadic nu-metal additions such as quasi-rapping, samples, and industrial-style beats.
While the ostensible aim was to offer something for every possible fan, in the end, the album received an even poorer reception than Jugulator by most fans and would result in the eventual reunion of the band.

Jugulator Review - Devin Comiskey 10/28/97
On October 28, 1997, we were all rewarded with "Jugulator" - the most intense heavy metal album to appear in years.
"Jugulator" begins with the title track, a pseudo "death-metal/thrash" (I hate using those terms, I use them lightly!) tune that slowly rises in intensity until it is slamming your head into the wall.
Adding to heavy feel of "Jugulator" is Priest's adoption of the dropped tuning guitars and bass, which has become a popular among metal bands the past few years.

 SoundStage! Judas Priest - Jugulator
Brutal is the word CMC International uses to capture the essence of Jugulator.
The din of crunching guitars, monotonous overuse of the double-bass kick, sometimes indiscernible bass lines, and stolen sounds of Metallica and other bands are swallowed up into a fl hole of noise.
If I had to describe Jugulator in one word, you could probably guess what that word would be: brutal.

Encyclopaedia Metallum - Reviews for Judas Priest - Jugulator   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Jugulator is cool uptempo speed, but as said earlier, the lyrics are atrocious.
Jugulator is a disapointment, it really is. It would have been hard to pick up after Painkiller, but this is not acceptable.
Jugulator takes a very aggressive and sometimes even thrashy approach, and while not being their heaviest (Painkiller takes that prize, of course), it is definitely their darkest album.

Music: Priest Power (The Boston Phoenix . 11-10-97)
Heavy-metal stalwarts Judas Priest are back after a seven-year hiatus with a new album, Jugulator (CMC International), and new singer Ripper Owens, who has taken over for the departed Rob Halford.
Jugulator finds Priest guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing still shredding with their trademark gothic riffs, and bassist Ian Hill and skinbeater Scott Travis relentlessly hammering out aggressive rhythms.
Jugulator also balances aggression with quieter moments, such as the apocalyptic elegy "Cathedral Spires," a tune that closes the album in epic fashion.

"Jugulator" has some cool tunes on it, but at the end of the day it just struck me as pretty ordinary.
Jugulator was a decent metal CD, but as a Judas Priest CD, it doesn't quite reach the realms the rabid fans expected.
Jugulator means a little more to me since that was the first Judas Priest tour I ever saw.

Tim was a singer that Judas Priest wanted and "Jugulator" is penned from start to finish for his singing style.
Song Jugulator opens obscurely through twisted guitar sounds that rip the air like chainsaw and band builds atmosphere by slow massive drum beat which is fantastically perforated through and through with extremely loud terrorizing guitar shreds.
"Jugulator" is a very special record, unique in all senses, repeatable only by a band who created it and a point where Judas Priest developed their extreme aggression that gets very close to thrash metal zone.

Rough Edge: Judas Priest CD Reviews
Whereas their solos on the two Halford-less CDs ("Jugulator" and "Demolition") were nearly out-of-control wads of chaos, the solos on "Angel" are closer to the classic Priest sound heard on CDs like "Painkiller." In other words, they're less frenetic and more ordered but still as fast and fiery as hell.
Interestingly enough, when "Jugulator" hit the bins with new vocalist Ripper Owens at the microphone, the band had turned up the aggression knob on their sound, too.
"Jugulator" was a powerhouse of a metal recording, too extreme for many of the band's fans, fans who knew every lick of "Stained Class" and "Hell Bent For Leather" by heart.

 Judas Priest - Jugulator: Music-Hills.com
Admittedly, it's kind of strange to hear Tim "Ripper" Owens screeching like the ghost of concerts past, but the band's rhythmic assault is fiercer than ever, mixing aggressive death metal riffs with the group's tried and true melodic grind.
See Judas Priest from this album Jugulator has done something that most metal bands are affraid to do or do not as well as Priest did.
I love death metal and hardcore like bands like hatebreed and cannible corpse but what Judas Priest did was made an album Jugulator with a heavier feel that todays metal has now but successfully bridged it to traditional metal feel.

Judas Priest : Jugulator - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The remaining Priests hired the menacingly-named young gun Ripper Owens as a vocalist and recorded Jugulator as their comeback album.
Owens is no Halford -- he simply doesn't have the presence, charisma or boneheaded wit -- but the group sounds hard, muscular and heavy and guitarists KK Downing and Glenn Tipton spit out riffs and solos at a blinding rate, sounding as good as they ever did.
Judas Priest doesn't have anything new to say on Jugulator, but fans should be pleased to know that they're finally re-stating their familiar themes with some style and authority.

It took them four years to find a new singer, ''Ripper'' Owens and the resulting disc, 1997's ''Jugulator'' was a waste of everyone's time.
After a tour, the band has remained virtually anonymous, but according to their website a new album is scheduled for March of 2001.
If they continue with Owens they must change their direction and rid themselves of the metal cartoon character clichés they are guilty of, such as ''Nightcrawler,'' ''The Sentinel'' and ''The Hellion.'' That was fine in its day but for a group of men, three of whom are entering their fifties, it is over.
