The chairman of the Centre Party parliamentary group, Juhani Korkeaoja, said that the requirements are determined increasingly by the ability to participate in the EU's military cooperation.
Admiral Juhani Kaskeala, the new Chief of Defence, said in a press conference that he considers the possible NATO membership of the Baltic countries as a stabilising factor in the area near Finland.
Kaskeala thought that the NATO membership of the Baltic countries would not increase the pressure on Finland or Sweden to join NATO.

In the opening of the 173th national defence course, Admiral Juhani Kaskeala, chief of the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) levelled naked criticism on the garrison closures and budget cuts recently announced by Seppo Kääriäinen (centre), the defence minister, also present at the event.
In his speech, Adm Kaskeala said the military was about to spiral into an acute finance crisis and lamented that FDF would have to tighten its belt to the tune of 100 million euros in the next two years.
Adm Kaskeala recalled that as a military non-allied country, Finland alone carried the responsibility for the defence of its territory, placing exceptional demands upon the performance of the Defence Forces.
