Jujitsu has not had a neat, organized history as many other martial arts have.It is easier to trace a martial art when there is a single source from which it began.
The next historical phase of Jujitsu, which had gone into decline with the closing of the Tokugawa era, was in 1882 when Jigoro Kano developed the sport of Judo from Jujitsu in order to increase the popularity of the martial arts and provide a safe sport using selected techniques taken from the art of Jujitsu.
Jujitsu was a complex art> the othe martial arts were also complex, but because they could be organized and limited in their scope they became easier to teach.

Jujitsu is the term which has been applied, at different times, to the whole of the ancient Japanese national art of unarmed self-defense practiced by the Samurai or Warrior Class of Japan.
The basic principle of Jujitsu is to avoid or give way before an opponent's superior weight and strength in order to overcome him by using his weight and strength to his disadvantage, you learn to use leverage, balance, and continuous motion to maximize your effectiveness against an attacker.

 Brief Jujitsu History
Jujitsu is an ancient art of self-defense that can trace its roots over two thousand years, but as it is a parent art, one cannot delineate a straight line, such as in two of it's "children", Judo and Aikido.
