Schoenberg, Strauss, Sibelius; Christine Brewer (sop), BBC SO, Jukka-Pekka Saraste (con); Barbican Centre, 1st November, 2003 (AR)
The closing ‘cello passages were ominous and stark with Saraste bringing the music to an abrupt and chilling end, allowing a few seconds of reflective silence to follow by keeping his hand up to stop the anticipated applause: silence was all that was left.
Saraste clearly had total control and understanding of the score and let the music evolve organically with no artificial tempi changes or distortions in dynamics.
Throughout, Saraste conducted with nervous incisiveness and heated concentration with the BBC SO proving themselves yet again to be one of the UK’s most versatile orchestras, totally in tune with this composer’s unique, complex sound world.

Sibelius, Lindberg, Mahler; Randi Stene (mezzo), BBC Symphony Orchestra, Jukka-Pekka Saraste (con); Barbican Centre, 30th September 2003 (AR)
Saraste ended his concert with Sibelius’ Sixth Symphony in D minor, Op 104 (1923) and, as with Tapiola, adopted flowing, rock steady tempi throughout and smooth orchestral textures, with an emphasis on the strings at the expense of the brass and woodwinds.
Saraste’s magnetic performance of Sibelius’ symphonic poem Tapiola, Opus 112 (1926) had the perfect blend of starkness with serenity, with an orchestral balance which was essentially string oriented.
Gustav Mahler’s Songs from ‘Das Knaben Wunderhorn’ (1892-99) opened part two with Saraste and the BBC SO seemingly more in tune with this composer than with Sibelius.

Other members of the jury included conductors Neeme Järvi and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and composer-conductor Oliver Knussen.

Instead of first-, second-, and third-place awards, which would have carried prizes of 15,000, 12,000, and 10,000 euros, the jury created new award categories, including an “incentive prize” of 7,500 euros granted to Andreas Tselikas and awards of 1,500 euros each to Jan Söderblom and Shuntaro Sato, who made it to the final round.
