Styne was born in London, England as Julius Kerwin Stein of Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine.
Styne attended Chicago Musical College, but before then he had already attracted attention of another teenager, Mike Todd, later a successful film producer, who commissioned him to write a song for a musical act which he was creating.
Styne was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972 and the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981, and he was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 1990.

Born in London, Styne was taken to the USA at the age of eight, where he studied piano at the Chicago College of Music, but abandoned a career as a concert pianist to play in popular bands, and went on to become an arranger and a vocal coach in Hollywood.
At one time, Styne played the piano in a strip club, and Gypsy, one of his biggest successes, was based on the autobiography of a stripper called Gypsy Rose Lee, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Another notable musical for which Styne wrote the score was Bells Are Ringing (1956) by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

The year was 1912, and the young boy who would one day become Jule Styne, Broadway and Hollywood composer extraordinaire, was on his way to America's heartland of Chicago.
Successful as a vocal coach, Styne was soon discovered by 20th Century Fox president, Joseph Schenck, who brought him to Hollywood to work with such stars as Shirley Temple, Alice Faye, Tony Martin, The Ritz Brothers and others in that studio's stable.
Jule Styne died in 1994 in New York City.

Styne and Cahn had an unsuccessful stage musical in 1944, GLAD TO SEE YOU, about a touring USO group on the islands where men were in battle which starred Eddie Foy, Jr., Jane Withers and June Knight.
This time, Jule Styne wrote to the lyrics of Leo Robin with the libretto by Joseph Fields and Anita Loos based on her book A GIRL LIKE I.

All Things Considered, December 31, 2005 · Jule Styne wrote some of the most popular songs in American history, including "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow," and "Three Coins in a Fountain." Saturday, Dec. 31 marks the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Styne would eventually co-write dozens of hits with lyricist Sammy Cahn like "Time After Time," and "Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week." He co-wrote "Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend," made popular by Carol Channing in the Broadway musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with Leo Robin.
Styne died in 1994 at the age of 88.

After being rejected from classical performance because of the size of his hands, Styne began writing songs as consolation, and attended Chicago Musical College while organizing several jazz bands during the 1930s.
Styne resumed working with Comden and Green with 1967's Hallelujah, Baby!, a difficult attempt to comment upon the history of African-American involvement in show business.
Their 1970 production Look to the Lilies was a complete failure, though Styne resumed his stride two years later with Sugar (an adaptation of the 1959 film favorite Some Like It Hot) and Lorelei (more a revival of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes than a new production).
