Fascination with the problem of the Diluvium, which formation on the basis of superposition could be recognized by its draping over all else, led Jules Desnoyers to study them.
The name Quaternary was a continuation of Arduino’s named "mountains" of rock, which on the basis of superposition he had reasoned had come into being sequentially in the formation of the Apennines, in Italy.
His subdivision of the Tertiary, published in 1833, was into three "periods." The age of each was indicated by the percentage of is fossil molluscs (clams and gastropods) that continue as living species.

In 1829 the French geologist Jules Desnoyers proposed the term Quaternary (or "Fourth") to describe certain sedimentary and volcanic deposits in the Seine Basin in northern France.
Although these deposits contained few fossils, Desnoyers was convinced on the basis of field studies that they were younger than the third or Tertiary series of rocks.
In 1837 the term Drift came to be used for such sands, gravels, and boulder clays.
