Cottian Alps (Alpes Cottiae or Cottianae) included the portion of the main chain dividing Piedmont from Dauplhine and Savoy, and extending from Monte Viso to the neighbourhood of the Mont Cenis.
Rhaetian Alps (Alpes Rhaeticae) derived their name from the Rh_ti, a powerful tribe or nation holding a large tract territory which appears to have extended from the sources of the Thine and the Ticino on the west, to those of the Adige and the Saiza on the east.
Noric Alps (Alpes Noricae) --- Under this name the entire region lying north of the Drave, and extending thence to the valley of the Danube on the north and the plains of Hungary on the east, was included.

Composed mainly of limestone, the mountains are bounded by the Fella River and Sella di (Pass of) Camporosso (northwest) and by the Sava River (north and east).
The mountains are bounded by the Dolomites (southwest), the Gail River and the Gailtaler Alpen (north), the Karawanken (east), and the Julian Alps (southeast).

The Eastern Julians, forming the larger area, are in Slovenia (the northernmost state of Yugoslavia), and the Western Julians in Italy.
A unique feature of the Julians is the chance they give to the mountaineer -the person who, not necessarily an experienced rock climber, has a deft foot, a head for heights, a love of exploration and a sense of fulfilment in the mountains.
The Julian valleys are beautiful and many of them can be explored by car for at least some distance, as I proved for myself after a severe illness when, although desperately disappointed that I could not reach the tops, I had a marvellous holiday all the same.

The natural as well as cultural heritage of the Julians is well preserved, unlike that of some other Alpine regions where severe intervention in tourism and intensive farming has utterly transformed the original appearance of the Alpine landscape, impoverished its animate and inanimate nature, and turned entire regions into urbanised amusement parks.
Mountains in general are extremely important as reservoirs of drinking water, and this is why the Julian Alps are vital for the bulk of Slovenia’s population.
In the Julians there are two autochthonous breeds linked with mountain pasturing: Bohinj cika cattle on the Gorenjska side of the Julians, and Bovec sheep on the Primorska side.
