Guardian Unlimited Politics | Special Reports | Obituary: Sir Julian Critchley
Sir Julian Critchley, who has died of cancer aged 69, was a long-standing Conservative back bench MP who never obtained political office or exercised much formal influence.
Critchley was once rebuked for modelling a suit for Town, a mildly trendy men's magazine in the early 1960s.
Critchley was immensely proud of his Shropshire heritage, which he related most evocatively in his autobiography.

Telegraph | News | Sir Charles Morrison   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Sir Charles Morrison, who died on Monday aged 72, was Tory MP for Devizes from 1964 to 1992 and one of a small group of die-hard Heathite rebels who had no hope of preferment under Margaret Thatcher but never produced a coherent alternative to her brand of Conservatism.
Regarded even by his fellow "wet" Julian Critchley as "Left-wing", and described uncharitably by Right-winger Alan Clark as "wet, defeatist, utterly useless", Morrison espoused all sorts of causes which put him at odds with the party leadership and its rank and file.
Tall and good-looking, he affected a patrician air of good-humoured nonchalance (Julian Critchley described him as "Brideshead Revisited"), and had a gift for putting other people at their ease.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Hague's final plea on pound
William Hague yesterday put saving the pound at the heart of his final appeal to Euro-voters and warned dissident ex-MPs and MEPs on the Tory left that they will be expelled from his party if they back the Pro-European Conservative party in tomorrow's elections.
Only Lord Gilmour, the first cabinet victim of Lady Thatcher's ideological purges in 1981, has stated outright that he will back the breakaway faction, but eight more Europhile Tories, led by Sir Julian Critchley, hinted in a letter to the Times that they would do the same.
Mr Hague yesterday denied that he had promised former chancellor Kenneth Clarke not to say "never" to the euro as the price of his support.
