May began work on her Saga of the Pliocene Exhiles, a related series that she imagined would have broader appeal.

 Raven's Reviews: Julian May
May is a well-regarded fantasy writer and editor, but I have only read one and 1/3 of her books, so I can't give a clear idea of her work overall.
That may not be her fault, however, because she was writing in a world partially created by other people, which always seems to strain a writer's abilities.
Three authors (Marion Zimmer Bradley, Julian May, and Andre Norton) attempt to write three characters- triplet sisters- on three seperate quests, and the results were frustrating.

'Perseus Spur' an Uneven Change of Pacing for Julian May
Julian May is not a writer of space operas so much as a creator of narrative operas set in outer space.
Just as suspense is not one of May's strongest suits, she further hampers herself in this effort by focusing on Frost, an irascible and curmudgeonly hero on the model of both the Pliocene Exile's disgraced alcoholic pilot Richard Voorhees and the Galactic Milieu's Rogi Remillard.
May paints this political-economic framework with the painstaking detail of her more fully developed Galactic Milieu, blending the panoramic sweep of history with the everyday human touch that made that previous work so compelling.

There are nine books by science fiction author Julian May in her Milieu world - four books in the Saga of the Pliocene Exile series, two books in the Intervention series, and three books in the Galactic Milieu trilogy.
The four books in 'The Saga of the Pliocene Exile' were originally published between 1981 and 1984, and reissued during the early to mid 1990s; in the British edition, the series was retitled 'The Saga of the Exiles'.
May's most famous story was probably her first published, the classic 'Dune Roller'.

 Julian Day Numbers
Julian Day Numbers, or the Julian Date (JD), is the absolute count of days that have elapsed since Noon 1 January 4713 BC on the Julian Calendar, or on what may more strictly be called the Julian "Proleptic" Calendar, meaning the Julian Calendar as applied to an era prior to its actual use.
The "Scalinger Year" is thus one less than the year of the Julian Period, and may be obtained by adding 4712 instead of 4713 to the year of the AD era.
1677 is then multipled by the number of days in four Julian years, 1461, and 1 is multiplied by the number of days in a common Julian year, 365.

I agree Belgarion, Julian May does seem to a neglected author, and her Saga of the Exiles is brilliant IMHO, and believe me, it only gets better with the other books.
Her stuff may be more SF, but it says something for her writing that I liked her works so much, as I find most SF difficult to get into.

While the 'Saga of the Exiles' is an excellent fantasy/Sci-Fi story that can be happily read on its own, it does leave quite a few storylines open, both in the Beginning and in the End - and for anyone eager to find out the truth, 'Intervention' is the next step in the line.
