Topic: Julian Morrow

  Emma's Diary
Julian shifted and said quite low, "The understanding is this, my good man. My wife will only hear good and pious things regarding her questions about her husband, his family or our life together from you and this church else you will quickly find yourself among the damned.
Julian's voice is quite fine and he had partaken of enough champagne to allow others to hear his voice as we joined others in song.
Julian whispered to me to say nothing and then told the man that he did not know what he meant, but he knew that he was holding the weapon at a helpless woman.

Donna Tartt interview, Vanity Fair 9/92
But then, with a Horatio Alger-esque feat of intellectual pluck, Richard impresses some of Morrow's students with his knowledge of the subject, and is accepted into the fold.
And what a fold it is! Morrow's one demand is simple: that the new student take every course with him.
They are all of them, Julian included, fabulous monsters: a very catalogue of Waspocratic quirk, with their pressed white shirts and dark suits and tea drinking and euchre playing and constant smoking and drinking, their insistence on using fountain pens and tossing off conversational sallies in classical Greek.

Comment from aojennie - 1/24/06 3:52 PM Canoness, you cannot have ever have thought that Julian was a pious man! As for him being Catholic, we had thought he was at least Catholic in name, but it seemed he didn't know his rituals on it.
It is interesting to us to realize that Julian knew when he had to do some backspacing rather than press his opinion when he "crossed the line." Heather said this entry proves that he loves Emma much, much more than we have given him credit.

Morrow would appear on a television as if he was overseas, although he did actually conduct a number of vox pops in the USA to highlight American ignorance of Australia, other countries and international affairs in general.
He would, amusingly, still speak about stories with no relevance to the US and sit as if he were actually on the news desk, and when the anchors would look at the screen on the other side of the room at other out-of-studio guests, Julian Morrow would do the same.

The few snippets of his teaching we are given do not seem to me to be particularly inspiring or erudite, and it is really left to the reactions of his students to inform us of the effect he has on them.
Had I not been similarly - if not so extremely - inspired by two of my own teachers, I think that the cowardly and ineffectual Julian of the second half of the book would have rung much more true for me than the Mentor of the beginning.
