Julian Opie - Mary Horlock - Tate Publishing(UK)
Perhaps more than any artist of his generation, Julian Opie (b.1958) has taken his art beyond the gallery walls and out into the mainstream of cultural life, testing his ideas in a multitude of different mediums.
This is the first publication to offer a complete and highly illustrated survey of his career and work: from the early figurative painted metal sculptures, through 3-D evocations of European highway travel and urban high-rise buildings, to his recent cool graphic style, which has been seen on billboards and in large-scale site-specific wall paintings.
Mary Horlock's text explores the way Opie's unique, trademark visual vocabulary has developed, and her interview with him reveals much about the motivation and vision of this most individual of artists at an important point in his career.

Worcester Art Museum - Wall at WAM: Julian Opie
Although rendered through the technology of the computer, Opie's world is in effect a meditation on the complex play between nature and artifice, sign and reality observed and experienced in the world itself.
In the next installation of Worcester Art Museum's mural project, the Wall at WAM, Opie responds to the dramatic scale of the Renaissance Court and its unique juxtaposition of the ancient and contemporary worlds.
Julian Opie is represented by Barbara Krakow Gallery in Boston and Lisson Gallery in London.

 Julian Opie
Opie's sculptures are intended to look like copies of sculptures, souvenirs of a distant original, edited versions on a different scale; they are often the cut-out versions, two-dimensional impressions of three-dimensional objects.
The impetus behind this artist's critique of the society of the spectacle derives from the extent to which contemporary modes of observation are governed increasingly by the conventions of the computer screen, by the operation of two dimensions masquerading as three, and by the representation of bodies and objects without texture.
Opie's Rest Area is not the three dimensional equivalent of a screen-saving device, but a reminder of the way the body can occupy space and time according to its own determinations.

Julian Opie was born in Britain in 1958.
Julian Opie's work challenges the distinctions between sculpture, painting and the everyday objects of our modern environment, such as cars, buildings, and roads.
Opie removes it from its setting and takes away its chance irregularities - the bumps and scratches, for example, that characterise a particular vehicle.

 Lisson Gallery: Julian Opie
In this new body of work, Opie extends his language of portraiture by devoting one room to each of three subjects: Sara, a professional model, Monique a Swiss collector, and Bryan, a well-known rockstar.
Preparing no fewer than 58 drawings to realise the convincing fluidity of her dance, the deadpan treatment of her ‘striptease’ subverts the normal expectation of the viewer.
In another work Opie imposes Sara’s figure onto a lenticular panel, the effect of which refers to cubism’s deconstruction of form whereby it is fragmented to reveal several sides simultaneously.

Composed of his characteristically simplified lines and shapes, Julian Opie's portraits are rendered through computer technology.
Whereas most of Opie's portraits feature unknowns, people drawn from his personal life, some commissioned works feature public figures like Kate Moss or Michael Schumacher.
But, by identifying them in the titles only by their first names, Opie zaps these celebrities of their fame and mythic status, simplifying them down to the familiar, human shape of their faces.
