 Hulme, Juliet Marion (Biography)
Juliet Marion Hulme was the firstborn child of Henry and Hilda Hulme, born on October 28, 1938 in Greenwich, on the South Bank of the River Thames, south-east of the City of London.
Juliet benefitted from a recent change in the law which forbade capital punishment for persons under 18 years of age convicted of capital crimes (this was the first case, though the law was 3 years old), and incarceration "During Her Majesty's Pleasure" for an indefinite duration was automatically prescribed.
Juliet Hulme was perceived by the public to have been the dominant and willful 'ringleader' and it was decided to give her the harshest treatment possible, at least on paper--largely, it would seem, to appease the public's thirst for vengeance.

Juliet Hulme was the elder daughter of Henry Hulme, an English physicist who arrived from England in 1948 to become rector of the University of Canterbury.
Hulme was sent to Mount Eden Prison and Parker to Paparua Prision for a time while a new secure unit was completed at Arohata near Wellington.
Hulme left the country within days of her release to join her mother, Hilda Hulme, and Walter Perry, who had married during her jail term.

By "rough metal road" Juliet Hulme meant a road that was paved but with a surface covering of small stones; it was necessary to walk a short distance from the bus terminus up the hill to the tea kiosk in Victoria Park.

Even as Juliet's dramatic response to her parents' news symptomatises the lasting damage she has sustained as a result of her prior separation, it also recalls the earlier scene in which she had managed to contain her anxieties by placing her faith in her mother's promise.
Triggered by Juliet's fear of abandonment as well as her mother's present disengagement, the emergence of the Fourth World is clearly shown to represent Juliet's defensive attempt both to mask and compensate for her sense of loss.
When Juliet's decision to collude with the murder is rendered in the balcony scene, the aria she sings is intercut with the second shipboard sequence so that the fantasy the girls wish to fulfil through the murder is brought to the fore.

The two young girls who now seemed to be drowning in a sea of grief and panic, had, it would soon be learned, carefully plotted her death.
