After the proclamation of Julio Prestes' victory over Dr. Getulio Vargas and his Liberal Alliance in the elections of March 1930, the nation remained tense.
Hailed by his followers as "the knight of hope," Prestes concentrated on the junior ranks of the military caste, many of whom were bitter over not being promoted with Vargas's tenentes.
Prestes was noisy and troublesome, bent on disrupting the deliberations of congress by undignified tactics and throwing business life into chaos through strikes and demonstrations.
