Though anyone familiar with the Mars Volta should know the story of Julio Venegas, there are quite a few that are unknowing of such a disturbing, yet fascinating story that runs through the course of the Mars Volta's first full-length album, De-Loused in the Comatorium.
Julio, a good friend of the band, was known to be a rather avid illegal substance user, now famously known to have experimented with the mainlining of rat poison.
One day, Julio took it to a new extreme, overdosing on morphine, a drug usually used in hospitals for pain-relief.

That LP, the recently released De-Loused in the Comatorium, is a chronicle of the circumstances leading to the suicide of Julio Venegas, a friend and mentor from ATDI's early days in El Paso, Texas.
The band credits Venegas with exposing them to new sounds, giving them the confidence to experiment with ideas beyond punk's blunt sonic rebellion.
Referring to De-Loused's surreal cover, on which a gold head spews light from its gaping mouth, Bixler reflects on the heights -- spiritual, not commercial -- to which TMV's music may, in theory, be able to reach.

Julio Venegas, a close friend of the band's, committed suicide in 1996, and as the media has repeatedly pointed out, De-Loused in the Comatorium is supposed to be a chronicle of his life and death.
This is a monumental case of the media blindly reviewing off their press kits-- there's absolutely no way of gleaning this story/idea/topics/concept/whatever in the hilariously awful, sub-Burroughs, refrigerator-magnet montage of dark PSAT words that make up this album.
The only sensible summation of Venegas' demise seems to be that he proclaimed, "Now I'm lost," then "searched" for "something" for a "long time," then cried "Is anybody there," and finally "took" the ol' "veil cerpin taxt." Huh.

With Venegas as his muse, guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez devised riffs for this record that are as original as classic lines by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page or King Crimson's Robert Fripp, though he mimics neither.
Bixler-Zavalas says the titles had to be weird, since the songs mean to chronicle Venegas' otherworldly experience in a coma before his death.
In the end, Venegas suffered greatly, barely surviving one suicide attempt before finally taking his own life.

Julio Venegas, who took his own life in 1996, was an artist and close friend of the band, and Zavala's brief dedication to Venegas on ATDI's same-year track "Embroglio," in Zavala's eyes, did not quite do their friend's tragic loss justice.
While inspired by Venegas, the record actually follows a fictionalized suicidal character through a vividly illustrated drug-induced coma for the majority of the time.

Nude as the News: The Mars Volta: De-loused In The Comatorium
Based on the sad tale of Rodriguez and Bixler's friend, Julio Venegas -- who was one seriously fucked-up kid -- Mars Volta's newest joint is the rock opera Pete Townshend or Jimmy Page would have written if they grew up on punk.
I literally can't tell you which stage of Venegas' journey this tune is about -- I have no idea really; lyrics aren't included -- but there isn't a more powerful, dynamic, and multifaceted song being released today.
Buttressed by riffs with more meat than a Texas killing floor and a drum pattern that would make John Bonham blush, "Cicatriz" is a 12-minute barnburner that kicks sonic ass until its halfway point, where it proceeds to disintegrate into a gorgeous, pile of tangential guitar solos and reverb atmospherics.
